Unlocking the NBA Season: Week 2

2011 NBA Lockout Simulation scores and results for Week 2

Each Wednesday during the 2011 NBA lockout, WhatIfSports.com's NBA simulation engine will simulate the previous week's unplayed games, using the NBA's actual 2011-2012 schedule. The NBA simulation includes cumulative standings updated each week, a game of the week, a player of the week and statistical leaders.

The statistical inputs to the NBA simulations are based upon analysis of each team's roster, depth charts and statistically-based player rankings. Rosters reflect all transactions prior to the lockout and rookies are based on players of statistical equivalence.

The players have rejected the owners' latest offer and a lift of the lockout has never looked bleaker. Negotiations are moving to the federal court and David Stern has announced that games are officially cancelled through December 15th.

NBA fans, it's time to prepare for the worst.

We'll be simulating every game of the NBA season for the duration of the lockout. Check back every Wednesday to review the previous week's action.

Together, we can get through this.

NBA Week 2: November 9 - November 15

The Portland Trail Blazers have been perhaps the league's biggest surprise to start the season. They've begun the 2011-12 campaign with a 6-1 start, including wins over the Nuggets, Lakers and Spurs. LaMarcus Aldridge leads the team with 21.9 points, and his 11 rebounds per game are well over last year's pace of 8.8 boards per contest. A healthy Greg Oden has been held to a conservative 18.1 minutes per game off the bench, but his 8.7 points and 7.9 rebounds are a welcome contribution.

Meanwhile, things couldn't be going much worse for the New Jersey Nets. Losers of their first six, the Nets have struggled to score with guard Deron Williams in a shooting slump. Though Williams is averaging 10.8 assists, he'll need to do better than 10.7 points on 27.7 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from behind the arc if the Nets hope to right the ship.

Player of the Game: Manu Ginobili - 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists

Dating back to 1999, either the San Antonio Spurs or Los Angeles Lakers have represented the Western Conference in the NBA Finals 11 out of a possible 13 times. That streak has brought the conference nine championships (four by the Spurs and five by the Lakers). These two hardwood juggernauts met in our Game of the Week.

The Spurs learned how to score in bunches last season, but they haven't forgotten head coach Gregg Popovich's defense-first philosophy. Tied 56-56 at the half, San Antonio turned up the intensity on D, holding the Lakers to 34 second half points. It proved more than enough and the Spurs cruised to a 107-90 victory. Manu Ginobili led the charge with 23 points and five rebounds. Tim Duncan added 17 points and a robust five blocks, while rookie Kawhi Leonard scored a season high 12 points off the bench.

The Lakers struggled to find range from deep and shot 3-for-22 on three-point attempts. Kobe Bryant (0-for-5) and Lamar Odom (0-for-4) were the biggest culprits in the poor shooting display. The Lakers were led by double-doubles from Pau Gasol (22 points, 12 rebounds) and Andrew Bynum (13 points, 11 rebounds). Bryant added 18 points and six assists.
