Game of the Week: Alabama at Auburn
With one finger raised and aimed directly at Columbus, Bo Schembechler must be spinning in his grave. At least for this season, Michigan is a shell of its former self. Al Borges' offense is 62nd in passing, 100th in rushing and ranked 96th overall in the country. Greg Mattison's once-heralded defense is hovering around 50th in the country. The Wolverines have lost four out of their last six games.
Ohio State heads to Ann Arbor as a 12 1/2-point favorite. The 12 1/2-point spread is the largest in this series since 2010, when the Buckeyes were a 16 1/2-point point road underdog. Ohio State won the game, 37-7 (Source: MLive.com).
Roughly 700 miles south, No. 1 Alabama will square off against No. 4 Auburn in the annual Iron Bowl. Once again, the road team is heavily favored as Vegas is handing the Tigers 10 points up front. The Tide's average margin of victory is more than 33 points over its last nine games.
The Tigers' rushing attack (320 YPG) led by Tre Mason must thrive on Saturday against Alabama's fourth-ranked rush defense (91.2 YAPG). It's the ol' unstoppable force hitting an immovable object adage.
Mason has rushed for 115-or-more yards in three straight games and 100-or-more yards in six games this season. He's scored at least one touchdown in all but one game (Mississippi State) this season.
Quarterback Nick Marshall compliments Mason out of the backfield with 823 yards on 123 carries and nine touchdowns.
The Tigers' defense mimics "bend, but don't break" units. They allow 153 rushing and 253 passing yards per game – 53rd and 100th in the country respectively – but boast a 30th-ranked scoring defense at only 22 points allowed per game.
What is there to say about Alabama that hasn't been gnawed on like Nick Saban's pregame oatmeal cream pie? The Tide's passing, rush and scoring defense all rank inside the country's top seven.
A.J. McCarron has taken care of the ball all season with only five interceptions. The quarterback only has 13 interceptions in three full seasons at Alabama. What a lovely lookin' statistic.
We simulated the Tide and Tigers 101 times and it's Alabama winning 72.8 percent of the time by an average score of 25-17.
