For those who love basketball and its rich history or whom have ever dreamt of running an NBA franchise, SimLeague Basketball not only provides an opportunity to learn about and play with NBA greats, but it pits users against other users in full 82-game seasons.
Want to load up on scoring? How about a duo of Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain? Do you like to pound the boards? How about Dennis Rodman along with Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor up front? Love the Celtics? Start Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Bill Russell. But you may just run into a team of Lakers with Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Kobe Bryant, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Put Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Lebron James on the same team. Use any NBA or ABA player from 1951 to the present. SimLeague Basketball owners choose the players, the style, defensive matchups, playing time and tempo!
SimLeague Basketball provides an opportunity for basketball enthusiasts to play with teams comprised of the greats, while also learning about them and their history. It also offers fierce competition among users over a full 82-game season and playoffs.
Competition becomes intense as owners trade strategies and banter in the Forums, while the games are played on the simulated hardwood. This brings some of the most passionate and brightest basketball fans together and creates a sense of community for everyone.
How to Play
To start, coaches are given $42 million in salary cap money to build a team of 12 players. The inputs for the simulated games are based the player's real-life stats (or approximated statistics for early NBA and ABA players). After making crucial decisions on some of the final roster spots, owners will be assigned to a league with 23 other owners. Leagues are randomly broken into two conferences, each with two divisions of six. A schedule is generated and the user transforms into the team's Head Coach.
Coaches get the chance to set depth charts and target minutes at each position, pick an offensive tempo and a defensive style, strategize through defensive matchups, double-team opposing players, manage through injuries, and more. Regular season games are simulated twice a day for 41 days. During the season, every team and individual statistic is kept to track performance, assess the success of different strategies and view league leaders, All-Stars and MVP candidates.
After the regular season, the top six teams in each conference will vie for the SimLeague Championship in a tournament of best-of-seven series. The further an owner advances, the better the prizes. Just making it to the playoffs takes $1 off the owner's next SimLeague team. Making it to the Finals gets $4 off the next team and the league champion wins Reward Points, which can be redeemed for more SimLeague teams, t-shirts, gift certificates to Fathead.com or Amazon.com and more in our Reward Center.
How it Works
WhatIfSports.com's NBA simulation engine uses every stat it can find to simulate every possession in each game down to the play. Comprehensive research was undergone to find the exact probabilities of just about every occurrence in the game as well as the player and team attributes that cause such occurrences. The latest technological advances and strides made in statistical modeling were included in the building of the engine to ensure that it is the most comprehensive and accurate simulator around. And each game is run in less than a second, outputting a full boxscore and play-by-play.
Anyone can build and coach a basketball team of NBA greats. They "play" the games.
Full season leagues cost just $9.95 for over a month's worth of entertainment and competition on top of the chance to win great prizes (Now just $4.95 for first-time users!).
