User Interview: Lounpink

Q&A with noted SimLeague Hockey user Lounpink

We recently contacted noted SimLeague Hockey user lounpink to discuss setting lines, drafting teams, Chicago sports, Michael Collins, Vito Graziano, Eddie Mathews, assist-to-goal margins, BooBooLoo, Winston Churchill and Pinky Rinks.

WIS

Who is lounpink?

Lounpink

Lounpink is an id I created for ebay. It is made up of abbreviations of my two dog's names - BooBooLoo and Pinky Rinks. The person behind the name is an accounting manager for a hospital in Chicago.

WIS

How did you learn about WhatIfSports.com and our SimLeagues?

Lounpink

I discovered WIS from an ad on MLB.com in the spring of 2004. I originally joined to play baseball but got interested in and spent most of my first year and a half playing hockey. I now also do baseball and drafted my first two football teams this week.

WIS

Which are some of your favorite teams of all-time?

Lounpink

The 1963 and 1985 Bears; the Bulls teams of the 90's; the Blackhawks teams of the late 60s and early 70s.

WIS

Did you play much hockey (or other sports) growing up?

Lounpink

I never played hockey; I played football and baseball through high school.

WIS

What players did you admire most growing up?

Lounpink

This will kind of show my age, but all these players were in their prime when I was a kid - Mays, Mantle, Aaron; John Unitas and Jim Brown; Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull (still the top player to play his position).

WIS

What is your favorite sports moment?

Lounpink

Attending the 1963 NFL Championship at Wrigley Field with my dad in -10 degree weather (the home team won).

WIS

Besides simulation sports websites, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

Lounpink

My "hobbies" are taking care of two almost adult children and two dogs. My other hobby used to include playing a mainly Chicago sport of 16" softball from which I am retired after about 25 years of playing and pitching every team I played for to at least one championship.

WIS

What is your favorite WIS moment?

Lounpink

For playing, it would have to be winning a cup with my second hockey team; that team still has the best points record (131) of all my teams. Also, attending the Wrigley game last year with the WIS crowd and meeting a number of people I had "known" on the site for a long time - noose, dezmo, zlionsfan, and smeric and his long suffering lovely Mrs.

WIS

Which coaches, past or present, do you draw on for inspiration?

Lounpink

Ditka, because he was almost as charming as I am; Halas because he was able to coach until he was older than I am (and he had the advantage of owning the teams also).

WIS

If you had the power to replace Gary Bettman as commissioner, what is the first thing you would try to change?

Lounpink

Develop a marketing scheme that will get the NHL back to being a top attraction. From the 60s through the mid80s, the Blackhawks were the "hardest ticket" in Chicago. I also think there has to be some amount of contraction and a major US TV contract so that the salary cap can be increased and the remaining teams can have a group of quality players. With a decent TV contract, they could have revenue sharing with the teams in most need of money getting the greatest portion.

WIS

Build your all-time dream hockey team:

Lounpink

I just did this for a recent league - Gretzky, Hull, Richard, Orr, Harvey and Plante.

WIS

What is the top sports related thing you want to do in life that you have not yet done?

Lounpink

Nothing comes close to this - see the Cubs win the World Series.

WIS

Which five people, past or present, sit at your dream roundtable discussion?

Lounpink

This will most likely surprise everyone- I would like to meet three former US Presidents - Lincoln, Truman and Kennedy; Winston Churchill and Irish activist Michael Collins. The political leaders to hear them discuss what went through their minds in making various difficult decisions; Mr. Collins (whose mostly forgotten now because he was killed at a young age) to hear what he might have tried to accomplish had he lived and also for a personal reason - he is (supposedly) a distant cousin of one of my grandmothers.

WIS

What can you tell users who may be unfamiliar with the game about the merits of SimLeague hockey?

Lounpink

The game is fairly easy to learn; you don't have to be a big hockey expert to do ok. The latest version has a lot of options to win and more importantly you get to meet a great group of people.

WIS

In the newest version, what is your general strategy for building teams?

Lounpink

I try to build teams that spend as little on defense as possible and still have a good team. It's a little harder with the new version. I try to build at least three lines using the following setup - one forward with a lot more goals than assists; one about even, and one with a 3-1 margin of assist to goals.

WIS

Are there any players in specific that you like to put on your team?

Lounpink

Along with the "regulars" from 2.0, two players I used a lot have been Luc Robitaille and Jimmy Carson, usually on the same line. Luc's 20 best seasons for me would have probably put him in the NHL top ten. His last year for me in 2.0, he had 64-97-161 over 105 games (regular season and playoffs) and amazingly, my team actually won a cup. In 3.0, high goal scoring players with S% between 18-20 have become a good option like Gartner, Leeman and Bellows. Howe and Lindsay with a good assist center from the 50s is a good line.

WIS

Are there any players that you feel consistently underachieve?

Lounpink

In the new version, the big money goalies are poor. I have a current team going (in one of my leagues) where Plante is out performing the big money Hasek by a significant margin.

WIS

How do you go about setting your lines?

Lounpink

Well, if I told you everything, I might have to send my friend Vito Graziano to WIS headquarters. Seriously, it depends on the team and the league. I also make changes if I am playing someone I have played often and have an idea what may work against his (or her) team.

WIS

Do your game plans differ based on the team you have? What do you normally do with these settings?

Lounpink

I usually try to find a combination that will give me 6 wins in 10 games and then don't make changes (most leagues this doesn't happen and I will try different settings for lines that are giving up more goals than they are scoring).

WIS

Do you make transactions (call-ups/demotions, trades, etc.) during the season?

Lounpink

I use minor leaguers now in 3.0 if they are at the top two settings and draft weaker players for one line when setting up the team. I don't think I have used the waiver wire in six months.

WIS

What do you do during the season to try and separate yourself from other teams?

Lounpink

I think the team that wins is built in the draft; if you have made the right decisions initially, then you are ok.

WIS

Who are the users you respect and who challenge you the most?

Lounpink

This could be a long list - kettlevalley is my best friend here; sergei and randle gave me advice on how to play; all the people who helped with the WIS championship, bigbuzz, ldj, cp, lenihan; everyone from lenihan's LEGAL group; all the "sapheads"; ( yeah, I will admit I know then and they are a great bunch); jakyll, vlad, nick and yzer4 from a different group that I play against a lot; all the "regulars" from any "lou" league - damag, god_mike, aginor, the charming julz, WIS' main lady Whatifgirl, Siobhan, dubhe, the lovely omicron (pictures are proof), ecxxx, those who aren't mentioned it's just that I got tired of typing and a special mention to the person who challenged me in many leagues and is gravely missed at WIS - Camden. One final person I can't forget, my "adopted" Canadian nephew - Damned.

WIS

What is your favorite aspect of SimLeague hockey?

Lounpink

The 100+ friends/acquaintances I have met. To each of you, my sincere thanks.

WIS

What is your least favorite aspect of SimLeague hockey? If you could change one thing about the game that will not be changed for 3.0, what would it be?

Lounpink

I would not have increased the scoring change as much as what was done. I know there were a lot of complaints, but now I have a lot of games that look like late 90s baseball scores.

WIS

Have you ever met any other users or sitestaff in person?

Lounpink

Besides the people mentioned above, I have met lightbrigade (he lives in Chicago) and I met the WIS staff people who attended last year at Wrigley.

WIS

What advice can you give to new SimLeague Hockey users who want to succeed?

Lounpink

Send me a sitemail.

WIS

If you were in one of our games, which sport would you play? At which position? And, how much would you be worth?

Lounpink

My best sport was baseball so I would be a decent field, slow, very slow third baseman. For you old timers, think of Ron Santo or Eddie Mathews in a weaker season. Maybe about $4m?
