User Interview: Oldresorter

Q&A with noted Hoops Dynasty user Oldresorter

We recently contacted HD standout, Oldresorter, to discuss recruiting, setting depth charts, running practice, coaching "real" basketball players, Mark Johnson, Magic Johnson and the Wisconsin Badgers.

WIS

Who is Oldresorter?

Oldresorter

My son is ’majresorter’, I became ‘oldresorter’ when he helped me sign on, about 1 second went into the creation of the name. I am 52 years old and self employed as a management consultant – been very busy lately with installing the Toyota Production System into a manufacturing facility in Alabama.

WIS

Besides sports, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

Oldresorter

I play golf, I coach youth basketball, I like to read & I also am a pretty good card player.

WIS

Why do you think it is that sports are so big in our culture?

Oldresorter

A large percentage of our population likes competition.

WIS

Who are your favorite players of all-time?

Oldresorter

Magic Johnson / Mark Johnson (hockey)

WIS

What is your most memorable sports moment?

Oldresorter

US Olympics 1980

WIS

What are your favorite teams?

Oldresorter

Packers / Lakers / Badgers

WIS

Did you play basketball (or other sports) growing up?

Oldresorter

Golf, basketball, football and baseball – my high school was only 500 kids.

WIS

What is the top sports related thing you want to do in life that you have not yet done?

Oldresorter

A tie, I’d like to win my golf course’s club title (been close) & I would like to coach high school basketball (kind of sort of close to that too).

WIS

What would you consider your greatest WIS moment?

Oldresorter

My first national title was with Lakeland (the team my son and I first coached together, and which is located about 20 miles from our hometown). I was working in Houston at the time, read the PBP over the phone with my son on the other end of the line.

WIS

In Hoops Dynasty, how do you approach recruiting? How much of an edge do you think your strategy?

Oldresorter

I recruit very conservatively. I think I am a top 10% recruiter, but definitely not in the top couple, my son is definitely a better recruiter & often laughs at the players I go after, given the prestige edge I have in some places.

WIS

What, if anything, do you change when winning/losing late?

Oldresorter

I base my last minute settings on how to win close games, versus what to do in blow outs.

WIS

What is your basic strategy for setting your depth chart?

Oldresorter

If I find something that works, I stick with it, but every team and season is different, so lots of what I do is trial and error.

WIS

Approximately how much practice time do you devote to offensive/defensive sets?

Oldresorter

20, unless I can give more.

WIS

How do you approach allotting individual practice time?

Oldresorter

I set study hall & FT’s, then allocate the rest, REB & LP next for bigs, BH, PA, PER for guards, I do Conditioning last.

WIS

Do you have any favorite players from any of your HD teams?

Oldresorter

My fav - Charles ‘Magic’ Critchfield, he was a PG & the first West Conn. superstar. Look at the leading rebounder, assists, or steals at West Conn. in D3 Tarkanian, you will see why I liked him.

WIS

Have any other coaches sought you out for help? Do you mind helping other users?

Oldresorter

I try to answer all sitemails, although recently I have dialed back my involvement, so I answer late or may even miss some.

WIS

Who are the users you respect the most?

Oldresorter

This is a bit unfair, as there are so many, but 4 come to mind, #1 is majresorter- he is really good at this & he and I still bounce ideas off each other, a tremendous advantage for both of us. #2 is Daalter – no one had the passion for improving the game & I miss his involvement. #3 is Rails, he has won lots of NT’s & has been able to do it year in and year out, which I try to do. #4 is a less known coach who is simply a great guy & a pretty good coach, nova71.

WIS

What is your favorite aspect of HD?

Oldresorter

The challenge, I think the game has enough variation that it is very hard to master, but not impossible.

WIS

Based on user feedback, Hoops Dynasty has been ever-changing since it began in March of 2004, including a major update last year. What are your thoughts on the update? What changes have you seen that you liked the most?

Oldresorter

At first I did not like the update, as I really race around doing my settings, but once I settled in, I can go twice as fast. I like the practice plan changes and the recruit sorting options.

WIS

What is your least favorite aspect of Hoops Dynasty? If you could change one thing about HD, what would it be?

Oldresorter

There are some recruiting issues that I wish could be addressed, several really, as this is the area that most directly affects us all & a coach must live with recruit related issues for 5 calendar months. If I could fix one thing, I would allow coaches to pick one team that they could get to easier, maybe like a bonus NT on your resume, just for one team, since so many coaches dream to get to one place and get close, only to miss out.

WIS

What is your ultimate goal in Hoops Dynasty? Have you reached it?

Oldresorter

I coach at Duke and Wisconsin, my original goals, but I have a few teams I am trying to get yet like UCLA, UNC and Kentucky.

WIS

If you were in one of our games, which sport would you play? At which position? And, what would you be rated?

Oldresorter

I would be a power forward in basketball, d3 player for sure, 70 PER, 70 LP, 70 REB, 35 BH, 45 PA, 20 ATH, 60 WE, 1 DUR / ST / SP, unless DUR / ST / SP can be negative. Thanks for asking!
