User Interview: buckicoyote

Q&A with noted Gridiron Dynasty user buckicoyote

We recently contacted Gridiron Dynasty standout buckicoyote to talk about recruiting, astronomy, setting depth charts, Baldwin Wallace, Napoleonic miniatures and Cleveland Indians heartbreak.

WIS

Thanks for taking the time out to meet with us.

WIS

Who is buckicoyote?

buckicoyote

I'm a 40 year old teacher in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. I have been married to my wonderful wife for 18 years and we have 2 daughters aged 13 and 7. I've been teaching 5th grade science for the last 11 years.

WIS

How did you find out about WhatIfSports.com?

buckicoyote

I followed a link from Fox Sports during bowl season In December of 2007. I had been playing Total Pro Football, with a dwindling group of people and was looking for a college game at the time. I didn't really care for that developer's version of college football.

WIS

Which of our games have you played? Which do you prefer?

buckicoyote

I started out with GridIron Dynasty. I played a free season of Hoops Dynasty, and just started playing Hardball Dynasty. I never really was a basketball person so I didn't really get into HD, but I love college football and baseball so I am really enjoying GD and HBD right now.

WIS

Besides simulation sports websites, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

buckicoyote

Being a science teacher, I really enjoy astronomy. I have an 8 inch telescope that I can run with my laptop that I view the stars and planets with my daughters quite often (sometimes with my students too). I have a 150 gallon fish tank that is temporarily housing freshwater fish after having a disease wipe out my saltwater fish population. My other two hobbies are computer games, and painting Napoleonic miniatures.

WIS

Who sits at your dream roundtable discussion?

buckicoyote

The first person would have to be Jesus. He always has to be number 1. Galileo would be there to discuss astronomy with. I've always been interested in Napoleon and his battles so we would have to include him. I would want George Washington there to discuss the Revolution and what the Founding Fathers really intended with the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.

WIS

What is your favorite sports moment?

buckicoyote

My favorite sports moment would have to be a Brown's game at the old Cleveland Stadium. In December of 1988, the Browns were playing the Oilers with a playoff berth on the line. It was a horrible first half and the Browns were losing. The second half started with the Oilers scoring and taking a big lead. The Browns then engineered one of their greatest comebacks in team history with Don Strock at QB. It was like 10 degrees outside and no one felt cold at all. The stadium literally was rocking as the fans cheered. I definitely remember when they were playing Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll part II and 80,000+ fans were screaming "Hey!" It was unbelievably fun to see that many people that involved in an event like that, and we had front row seats in the upper deck at the 50 yard line from my (at the time) future father-in-law. A close second would be Ohio State's 2002 National Championship, but I watched that at home. Third place would be the Indians 1997 World Series that ended with a heartbreaking loss in game 7.

WIS

Did you play football (or any other sports) growing up?

buckicoyote

Around the house, we played everything. All winter we played football in the backyards and all summer we played baseball. As far as organized sports go, I played little league baseball for about 7 years. I also played Junior Davis Cup tennis for the raquet club my family belonged too as well as a year for my High School team.

WIS

Who are your favorite players all-time? In today's game?

buckicoyote

My favorite baseball players for the Indians would be Andre Thornton and Omar Vizquel for all time and Grady Sizemore for today. My favorite football player would have to be Bernie Kosar, but today's Browns aren't that exciting but I'm hopeful that Brady Quinn can step up.

WIS

What is the top sports related thing you want to do in life that you have not yet done?

buckicoyote

I want to see the Cleveland Indians win a World Series. 1997 still sticks with me.

WIS

What is your favorite WIS moment?

buckicoyote

My first playoff victory at Baldwin Wallace in Hayes would have to be my favorite moment so far. I'd won my 2nd Conference Championship, but had never won a playoff game. It looked bad after the first half because I was down 20 points. I made my half time adjustments and shut out the other team in the second half, while scoring 28 unanswered points. Unfortunately, I lost in a close game in the 2nd round.

WIS

As a coach in GD do you draw on the philosophies of any past or present coaches?

buckicoyote

When I first started GD, I was at Baldwin Wallace again (I got my Master's Degree there), in Bryant. There were two great coaches that helped me get started there. They were cincredfan and jjmurphy. I sitemailed them many questions that they were very generous to answer. After a few seasons there and in Dobie, I joined two coaching circles led by mele316 and akua. After joining those circles, I really began to understand more of the game and started to really improve my game.

WIS

What is your favorite aspect of GD?

buckicoyote

I really enjoy recruiting. I love searching for players that fit what I want to do. Finding those niche players that can switch positions to make great players is a good feeling too. Playoff time is a lot of fun too. The best thing is the people that you meet though. I've actually met some of the other coaches in real life. No matter what we say on the coach's board, cgreenemax/awags is actually a really nice guy. I enjoy talking to many of the other coaches online too.

WIS

Least favorite?

buckicoyote

Waiting for the season to start after I've filled all of my scholarships. That is why I have 4 teams (+1 cocoached team with cgreene) now so I'm always active with one of them.

WIS

What do you believe is the biggest key to GD success?

buckicoyote

TALENT! I don't care how good a coach you are, if you don't have the players to execute the plan, you will not win. If you take two equal coaches, the coach with the better players will win 99% of the time. Therefore, you need to recruit the best players that you can and have the practice plan set up to increase their abilities the most.

WIS

What is your approach to recruiting?

buckicoyote

I like to look for players that have a high Work Ethic, a good Stamina rating, and have solid cores. I also look for players with good potential. Stamina is important to keep the players in the game. The cores are necessary for the player to do their job, and Work Ethic and Potential are there to get those other numbers improved as much as possible.

WIS

How do you go about setting your depth chart and game plan?

buckicoyote

For my depth chart, I try to balance out getting my underclassmen in for starts to build their Work Ethic early in their college careers and getting my best players in the game as much as possible to have that talent advantage. I adjust my gameplan based on the talent of the other team. If my team is a lot better, I use a base offense and dare the other coach to try to stop me. If they are equal or better, I try different things that I hope might work. On defense, I do a similar thing. If I have a talent advantage, I'll run a generic defense that will keep my team in the game. Against an equal or better opponent, I look for ways to find little advantages and try to take advantage of them.

WIS

Who are the users you respect and/or enjoy the most?

buckicoyote

I'm really happy with the conferences that I play in right now. The Big 10 in Bryant, The NJAC in Heisman, The OAC in Hayes (although I just moved up to Div II and am just getting to know the knew conference mates), and the SIAC in Warner have great coaches like plague, bhazlewood, zpmadden,holmer62, and socaldevil as well as many other great coaches and nice guys. My favorite has to be the OAC in Dobie though. I've been in and out of the conference several times though. While it is a great group of guys, Dobie's schedule doesn't fit in well with my other conferences, but I always go back because of the people. cgreenemax/awags, berm/bermanap, btbiermann, acres1972 and all of the other coaches that have come and gone (and come back again) have been great. No one will ever top the legendary (for the OAC in Dobie) tony9235 though (bit of an inside joke in Dobie, but check out Otterbein there if you want in).

WIS

What is your ultimate goal in Gridiron Dynasty? Have you achieved it?

buckicoyote

I want to win a National Championship at some level of course. I've had a couple of teams that I thought were capable of taking me there, but just haven't been able to put it all together yet.

WIS

If you were in one of our games, what sport would you play, at what position, and what would you be rated?

buckicoyote

I would probable play QB or a DB. As a QB, I would have great GI and Tech, average strength and athleticism, but low speed. At DB, I would again have good GI and Tech, but low speed. I'd have good hands and average tackling.
