User Interview: OneKrazyPuck

Q&A with noted SimLeague Hockey user OneKrazyPuck

We recently contacted avid SimLeague Hockey player OneKrazyPuck to talk about the MLD, drafting for balance, setting lines and his life outside of WhatIfSports, including: a secret talent of his that you can only see on Youtube, what he would change if he was commissioner of the NHL and why his Christmas is going to get even better this year.

WIS

Who is OneKrazyPuck?

OneKrazyPuck

Well Onekrazypuck, (or "okp" as my league-mates nicknamed me long ago) is Johnny, a 30 year old self-professed stat junkie, who is a happily married mailman from Toronto, Canada. I easily and luckily managed to turn my wife into a hockey fan long ago and God love her, she has had to put up with hearing just about every "sim-hockey-related" scenario imaginable. We have a son who is about one and half years old and we're expecting our second son on Christmas. Literally, he's due to arrive on Christmas, the due date is December 25th! With 2 boys, I figure we're well on our way to having enough boys for a solid C/LW/RW forward line combo someday. NHL, consider yourself warned!

WIS

How did you learn about WhatIfSports.com and our SimLeagues?

OneKrazyPuck

Actually it's been so long I don't remember exactly how I learned about this site. I do know that I, along with a bunch of other current WIS users were regulars on another hockey sim-site and we all sort of migrated over here at the same time. We were collectively fed up with the other site we were on and when we stumbled across WIS, we were hooked. We were especially impressed with the prompt customer service we received when we arrived here. We weren't used to it and it was a refreshing change from what we were used to.

WIS

Which games of ours have you played?

OneKrazyPuck

I tried a free trial season of basketball, which naturally didn't go too well considering I know nothing about the sport. I tried a few seasons of baseball and somehow managed to make the playoffs once! Sim-Baseball is fun and I will definitely be giving it another shot sometime in the future. Seeing as how hockey is my favorite sport, that's where I spend most of my time on here. Even though I wasn't very successful at any open leagues I've played in, I really enjoyed participating in them. I then gave the hockey dynasties a try and I was instantly hooked. So much so that I came up with the idea to create my own "krazy" version of an ongoing hockey dynasty made up entirely of the cyber athletes known as "MLers". The "MLD"(Minor League Dynasty) is about to begin its 17th season and was the 1st league/dynasty of its kind that I know of. Many managers involved with it have said its become their favorite league on the site. Some users are even now at the point where the MLD is the only league they play on WIS! What makes the MLD so special? The solid core of passionate and competitive GMs has been vital. I threw together some easy player retirement rules to make it so that every GM would get a feel for having to manage their teams to not only ensure success in the present, but in the future as well.

WIS

Besides simulation sports websites, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

OneKrazyPuck

Being new to fatherhood, my number #1 hobby these days is being the best Daddy that I can be! Other than that I love music. I have been plugging away at my guitar off and on for over 10 years. I don't think I am very good though so don't let the 10 years part steer you the wrong way. I should be a lot better than I am. I have a few crappy amateur videos up on Youtube, if you sitemail me and ask nicely, you just might get me to reveal my Youtube handle to you. I enjoy writing songs as well. Lately I've taken up drums! My wife is not too impressed, but my son sure is!

WIS

Which five people, past or present sit at your dream roundtable discussion?

OneKrazyPuck

Wow this is a tough one. I think I'm gonna take the easy way out and say 5 random members of my large family. My family is huge and spread out all over the place. I don't get to see them as often as I'd like so to have 5 of them at the same table in the flesh having a discussion about anything and everything, well that would be just great!

WIS

Which are some of your favorite hockey teams of all-time?

OneKrazyPuck

I'm a Leaf fan! It's all about the blue and white. Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that over the last few decades it's been mostly been blue!

WIS

What players did you admire most growing up?

OneKrazyPuck

I enjoyed Wendel Clark's physical game back in the day. Same thing goes for Gary Roberts. Gretzky was the easiest to admire. His numbers just blew me away, they still do to this day!

WIS

Did you play hockey (or other sports) growing up?

OneKrazyPuck

I could only play street hockey growing up. Best times of my life. Still got my goalie equipment lying around somewhere if anyone wants to lace it up. I also played baseball and ran track and field in high school.

WIS

Build your all-time dream hockey team:

OneKrazyPuck

Centers: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Doug Gilmour, Sydney CrosbyRight Wings: Pavel Bure (a healthy one), Teemu Selanne, Rick Vaive, Jari KurriLeft Wings: Alex Ovechkin, Gary Roberts, Wendel Clark, Bob ProbertDefense: Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Larry Robinson, and the 2 Als, Al MacInnis and Al Iafrate (just to watch their slapshots, can you imagine those to on the same powerplay!? That'd be "krazy"!)Goalies: Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur , Dominik Hasek

WIS

If you had the power to replace Gary Bettman as commissioner, what is the first thing you would try to change?

OneKrazyPuck

I'd give Canada another franchise or two, the fan interest is there. Relocate an existing struggling franchise or better yet, expand, everyone would be happy!

WIS

What is your favorite sports moment?

OneKrazyPuck

Has to be the Toronto Blue Jays winning the World Series back-to-back! I'm not much of a baseball fan but it's the only championship I've seen this city win in my lifetime. I suppose that makes me a bandwagon jumping fan but oh well, the partying was incredible!

WIS

What is your favorite WIS moment?

OneKrazyPuck

Finally winning a cup in my beloved MLD, back in lucky season #13. Winning any cup is generally a great moment for me because Lord knows I don't win many of em! Another favorite would be when I strategically applied and got selected to run the San Jose Sharks in the "No Lockout Challenge". That was an exclusive league than was run on the site when the NHL strike happened a few years back. I managed to win the Presidents Trophy and make it all the way to the Cup finals before being knocked out by those darn Florida Panthers! (Scotty Booman!!!) My success in the "NLC" even led me to be interviewed by a columnist from the New York Times, that was pretty cool!

WIS

Which coaches, past or present, do you draw on for inspiration?

OneKrazyPuck

To be honest, as strange and/or as ignorant as this may sound, I don't really focus on the coaches and therefore don't really have a favorite.

WIS

What is your general strategy for SimLeague building teams? What is the most important thing to keep in mind while drafting?

OneKrazyPuck

Balance things out. Though I personally haven't had much success with it! Win or lose, I have fun and to me that's all that really matters.

WIS

Are there any players in specific that you like to put on your team?

OneKrazyPuck

I have to confess, I don't really play with the "real players" that much these days. I spend all my time with the cyber athletes known as MLers. When I did use real players, I couldn't go wrong with a Wendel Clark or a Gary Roberts. Even if they were basically walking penalties, they got me a bunch of goals and lets just say I'm a fan of their 'grit'!

WIS

Are there any players that you feel consistently under or overachieve?

OneKrazyPuck

I don't win many cups so I will have to say all of them under achieve! Or perhaps it's the coach? Nah!!!

WIS

How do you go about setting your lines?

OneKrazyPuck

I'm a "If it aint broke, don't try to fix it" kinda guy. If it is broke or not working properly, then fix it! To this day, I'm still trying to fix and tinker with my team in order to make it successful. Again maybe it's the coach that's broken? Nah!!!

WIS

Do you make transactions during the season? Why or why not

OneKrazyPuck

It's rare that I will make a trade but I do pull the odd one off here and there, usually out of desperation. I get attached to my players but there are times when one lands in my doghouse and I send him packing as fast as I can.

WIS

Who are the users you respect and who challenge you the most?

OneKrazyPuck

I respect every user and everyone gives me a challenge! We're all here because we either love sports, stats and/or the thrill of competition. As for individual users, first of all, I've got to give a shout out to my Norwegian buddy Rammers. He and I go way back as far as sim-gaming is concerned. He and I have co-organized some very competitive leagues/tournaments/dynasties over the years and every time we square off, there is always this heightened sense of rivalry. All my fellow sim-fanatics who migrated with me to this site a few years back with whom I still battle it out with on a regular basis in the MLD, Corbs1019, Drg330, Blee3467, Big_drive, Canuk, Modo21, Max259. All the GMs, (past and present) in the MLD. The current group of GMs in the MLD are a solid bunch and earned my respect long ago (in alphabetical order) Bigbadgreen1, Bremiro, Cpetsche, Damag, Hellbent, Gollum, Jbar8888, Jmerch, Sakabakbrg, Smeric, Thewaffleman, Vicpat, Ukol, Vmorte, Yogsloth. Without the support of all these guys and their collective desire for a unique challenge, this site just wouldn't be as enjoyable for me. Speaking of the MLD, I can't forget to include this handful of ex-MLDers, finnski, jaydenw31, slorhav, gocam, mcbeth, tjeman, ldj_1. Bigbuzz whose 3 season MLer only dynasty helped spawn the idea for the MLD. Lastly, special thanks go out to one of my fellow migrators 2old2play. He was the first person to surprise me with an unexpected site gift certificate as a way of thanking me for my efforts. Others have given me similar rewards since he did, but he was the first so it really stood out to me because I really wasn't expecting anything like that and it was such a nice gesture. Thank you once again buddy! If I forgot anyone I apologize but technically I covered all my bases with my first sentence to this question.

WIS

What is your favorite aspect of SimLeague hockey?

OneKrazyPuck

The competition and the camaraderie are what I enjoy the most.

WIS

If you could change anything about SimLeague hockey and/or the site, what would you change?

OneKrazyPuck

Well I along with many other sim-hockey users are anxiously waiting for a hockey based dynasty similar to the ones that already exist for baseball, football, basketball. Heck even racing and soccer already have dynasty games! Not sure why us hockey fanatics are still waiting for our piece of the dynasty pie. As far as the existing hockey simleagues are concerned, I wish we were able to customize various aspects of the game like player names and division/conference names. Speaking of player names, it'd be nice to see some North American sounding last names included in the drafts. Having been a part of numerous drafts, I've seen more than my fair share of European last names such as Passiainen, Haltsonen, Majainmaki, and Nasarief.(all taken from the latest draft I participated in) It'd be a nice refreshing change to see some common North American last names in the drafts such as Smith, Sutter, Brooks, or Carter.

WIS

If you were in one of WhatIfSports' games, which sport would you play? At which position? And, what would you be rated?

OneKrazyPuck

I'd be a hockey player of course. Probably play the right wing and I'd cost ya a measly 500,000 units. I'd score you at least 20-30 goals a season but due to my physical game, I'd also help your team rise to and float high atop the Team PIM Rankings :) Put me in the game coach!
