It was an all-SEC final as Florida took on Kentucky for the fourth time this season. The Gators looked for a 4-0 sweep over the ever-improving Wildcats. The first 40 minutes ended in a stalemate as Cauley-Stein’s basket with eight seconds remaining forced overtime. In the extra period, Casey Prather’s go-ahead shot with 33 seconds left proved the game-winner and Florida captured its third NCAA Tournament championship in program history.
Florida collected 14 steals on Kentucky’s 16 turnovers. Kasey Hill led the team with four swipes. The bulk of the Gators’ scoring was provided by Prather (22 points) and Michael Frazier II (18 points).
Kentucky’s Julius Randle totaled 18 points and seven rebounds. The only other double-figure scorer for the Cats was James Young, who scored 12 points but was 0-for-6 from downtown and coughed the ball up four times.
