Mets-Pirates bet Topic

I placed a bet today with a friend that the Mets would have a better record than the Pirates this year.  (sad, i know)  I'm actually feeling pretty confident about it.  Pirates rotation looks bad, their better starting pitchers seemed to have had career years last year and I'm thinking will regress some.  They have Andrew McCutchen in their lineup, and little else.  They do play in a much easier division, thus have an easier schedule than the Mets.  But I'm feeling Mets win win 75 or so, and the Pirates will win 65-70.  Any Pirates fans out there wanna chime in? ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH

No way the Mets win 75.   They suck balls.

But you still might win the bet.

Pirates at .500 this year.  Mets around .500, depending if Santana can pitch around 175 innings

Team won 77 last year. I know they lost Reyes. But if they get a full year of Wright and Davis, and 25-30 starts from Santana, they can't win 75?

I'd take the Pirates to out-win the Mets this year.

Raised in Pennsylvania boy here... Bleed Philly red, but my best friend/best man at my wedding is a Bucco diehard.... Suggest a bet and I'll take the Pirates.

My 2 cents:
Pitt: 84w  (the monkey leaves the back.............)
NY: 73w

Pittsburgh 78+ wins, Mets 68 wins ( if Santana is healthy)
McCutcheon, Tabata and Presley better than all three Met outfielders
The  Pirate infield is better except for Wright...
The Pirate pitching is better and they play in an easier division...

Davis is better than Garrett Jones. Murphy and Walker are a push if Murphy doesnt tear up his knee trying to turn a double play for a 3rd straight year.

How is the Pirates pitching better?

They not only lost Reyes, they lost him within the division.  The teams that were way better than the Mets in the division are still way better, and the teams that were similar to them got better.  Clearly the #5 team in the division on paper right now, and it's hard to see that amounting to 75+ wins.  Stranger things have happened, however.

Quality of the team relative to the division is the best argument I've heard.  If these two teams were in the same division, this bet wouldn't exist.

I guess a little could depend on how moving the fences in affects the team as a whole but it won't just be more homers for the Mets.  The other teams will hit them also.

As for full years, I guess you could expect one from Wright but Davis has no injury history that's reliable.    Santana hasn't had 30 starts since 2008.   That's like me saying "If A-Rod hits 35 homers....."

I said 25-30 starts, which hes done in 2009, and 2010.  I understand the injury he had isn't something that's easy to come back from, but if he gets 25 starts with a 3.70 ERA or something, I'd be happy.  Davis had a freak injury last year (collided with Wright catching a pop-up), so you can't assume he's injury-prone either.  It's not like he's constantly getting hamstring strains, etc.  He also wasn't hurt in the minor leagues.

As for moving in the fences, I think the ballpark got into some of the players heads.  It's different when you play there half the season rather than showing up for 3 days and leaving.  I am curious how this affects Wright and Bay.

Just saying Davis has no history to work with.   He played a full year, he missed almost a full year.

Figure out what Santana has done in ST.  Did he make his starts?  Was he pushed back a day or two?    Just saying I wouldn't count on anything from him.   Phil Hughes.

You should also be curious what it does to your pitching staff.

Santana has done everything right in the spring, and his velocity is where it was before the injury, which is why I'm optimistic.
