I think the better question is whether Manny Ramirez would have cut it as a HoFer as a SS.
He knew how to cut-off throws from the OF.
This is why he'd probably be the best player of all time as a SS.  So let us anoint him as such!
He couldn't play SS, but if he had been able to play even league average defense at SS, then yeah, he'd have a legitimate argument for inclusion in the top 4 or 5 position players of all time.
Even then, I'd take Honus Wagner before Manny.

Couldn't say one way or the other.  It's really hard to compare guys from the turn of the century to modern day players.

zzzzzzzz who cares?  That's a stupid question that serves no purpose other than to derail.

He put up very good offensive numbers as a SS so he's in, how he would have done in a different role in an alternate reality is just mental masturbation that means nothing to the discussion at hand.

It goes back to the Rivera discussion.  His value is less because he was a relief pitcher.

OK next question: if this team played the 1927 NY Yankees, what would the gambling line be?

C: Billy Wagner
1B: Pedro's midget friend
2B: Chuck Knoblauch
3B: Edgar Martinez
SS: Manny Ramirez
LF: Bernie Williams
CF: John Elway
RF: Willie Harris
DH: Derek Jeter

SP: Mariano
RP: Pedro

Manager: Tim Tebow

WITH the caveat that you can use Mariano for 1 or 2 IP and then have Pedro finish the rest.

Once we get this tidbit out of the way I think it will really shed some clarity on where Mo ranks among the all time greats.

With Tebow as manager and Jesus as the bench coach, I think the '27 Yanks would be 100-1.  At best.

Exactly.

And you know who the starting pitcher is?  MARIANO ******* RIVERA!  Now who's to say that he wouldn't have been able to cut it as a SP?
