R.I.P. Ron Santo Topic

Some good memories.

***Buy the movie at ThisOldCub.com***

The theatrical trailer for the documentary about Chicago Cubs third basemen Ron Santo. It is directed by his son, Jeff Santo.

You can buy the movie at ThisOldCub.com on DVD and VHS. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to JDRF, Santo's foundation for Juvenile Diabetes Research.

Pat and Ron banter back and forth during a radio broadcast. Topics covered include Ron eating a hotdog, flossing in public and other inanities.

As my brother pointed out, the best part may be starting at 2:10 when Ron starts berating Pat over not picking a favorite cake.

RIP Ron, you will be missed.

Obviously not a NRA member.  Otherwise, we wouldn't be reading that story.
NRA Member or not, I think ink is lucky it was Chicago where a law-abiding citizen can't own, let alone carry, a firearm.  Although the law was just deemed un-constitutional.

Back on topic, RIP Ron.  Its a shame you won't be there to be inducted this time around.

Not living in the Chicago area I didn't get the chance to hear him much on the radio - maybe 2 or 3 times.
However, being a baseball fan since Dad took me to a game when I was 6 and now with gray hair, I can say that Ron truly was one of the best 3rd basemen in history. . . . Unreal his 11 seasons with 20+ homers and ROY and 6 times considered for the MVP Award. . . . . .  A real shame he didn't get to enjoy membership in the Hall ..... RIP Ron......

What's with all the baseball legends passing away in 2010?  First Robin Roberts, George Steinbrenner, Sparky Anderson, Dave Niehaus, Ron Santo, & now Bob Feller.  I hesitate to include Jose Lima on that list...

Dave Niehaus?

Don't think it's any more than in a typical year.

Old people tend to die.

Better by deader.  A strange way to look at a guy's career.  But congrats, Ronnie, wherever you are!

The HOF just got cheapened a bit more.

Somebody posted this on the CBS boards....I think it is very telling:

Ron Santo elected to Hall of Fame
1978 - Mathews
1979 - Mays
1980 - Kaline, Snyder
1981 - Gibson
1982 - Aaron, F. Robinson
1983 - B. Robinson, Marichal
1984 - Killebrew, Aparicio, Drysdale
1985 - Brock, Wilhelm
1986 - McCovey
1987 - Billy Williams, Hunter
1988 - Stargell
1989 - Yazstremski, Bench
1990 - Morgan
1991 - Carew, Perry, Jenkins
1992 - Seaver, Fingers
1993 - R. Jackson
1994 - Carlton

That's every possible year Santo could have been elected to the Hall by the BBWAA. He simply wasn't as good as these players.
However, du to the paucity of 3B in the hall, it is nice to see some 3B get recognition. The way the Hall and Vets Vote, you'd think 3B and catchers weren't part of the game.
Santo's problem was he wasn't Robinson, Schmidt, or Mathews.
