I'd rather have BIlly Butler or Chris Davis or Alex Rodriguez or 50 other players at the DH spot than a 41 year old Jeter.

And I think Jeter is awesome. At least 38 year old Jeter was (if you ignore defense).

Im thinking Jeter plays mostly SS for the next 2 years and retires when his contract is over. If Jeter wants to play, he'll either be convinced to retire by the Yankees, or will be another Bernie Williams. Jeter wont want to play with another team.

If Yankees want to pay Jeter to be DH after this contract is over, they'd be paying more money for less production than what would be available. But he's Derek Jeter.

Dh is designed for the old guy you don't want in the field.   They traded their next DH to Seatlle.   Posada retired.   A-Rod will get some DH AB.   As you can tell over the last few years, the Dunns, Damons and Thomes still have a spot on a team but they're not getting the 4y/63m deal anymore.   Would the Yanks pay Jeter 12m to DH?  I don't think so.  But he may not ask for that much.
This was my earlier point. I think Jeter would ask for that much, and more. He may settle for a one year deal, but he'll want to be paid. His last contract was based purely on reputation and "off-field" value to the Yanks, not his stats. Granted, he has proved peope (including me) wrong with his production this season, but I don't think many people saw him getting better at 38.

Over the last three years only four qualifying DH's have posted slugging percentages under .400 - Michael Young, Jesus Montero, Hideki Matsui, and Bobby Abreu.

If that's what you want from your Yankee DH...
SLG% is the only stat of value?   I thought that was WAR.

And, BTW, how was that hit?

You think maybe, just maybe, blowing bubbles could affect your concentration going for a outfield fly?
10/10/2012 8:35 PM
That's not on Jeter.

Jones always does that - it doesn't affect his concentration. His playing on the infield does affect his ability to get to balls on the track though. As Buck said, "we were probably playing him a little cheap there."

Most teams expect their DH to hit for power.

I have to disagree with this. I think the GOAL for most teams is to have their DH hit for power, but let's face it - guys are in better shape these days - they're playing their positions until they retire, with maybe one or two seasons at DH. There aren't many Thomes, Ortiz's, Winfields, Murrays, Edgars, etc. left. If a guy is doing nothing but hitting, he should have some pop...but there aren't as many of those guys available as one might think. Most guys are not content to sit on the bench for 90% of the game.

Not so long ago, most teams expected their LF to hit for power.   If not injured, Gardner would have gotten 150 starts in LF and hit 5 homers.

I think most teams expect their DH to hit.   Period.

Well, Gardner brings excellent defense and extreme speed on the bases. There is a lack of power, but also other benefits to having him in the lineup.

Assuming Jeter isn't able to continue to hit like he did this year (and if he does, forget it, play him at DH), he'd be a bad choice at DH because there will be dozens of other players who can do the job better. Guys like Carlos Quentin, Josh Willingham, Billy Butler, David Murphy, even Adrian Gonzalez could probably be had by the Yankees over the next couple years and they are all likely better hitters in three years than 41 year old Jeter.

You picked .290/.330/.390 not me.    You find a place for that guy.    Lots of teams have plenty of starters who can't do that.
10/11/2012 11:16 AM
Mike, if it's a DH, Yankees can probably do better for cheaper.
