Scuttlebutt has it happening.   Yanks pick up 50-60m(Bud approves?) and are off the hook for HR milestone bonuses.    A-Rod agrees to it because Wrigley is a better hitters park and he still has a big stage.   Not sure what the Cubs give up but it can't be much.

I would think the Dodgers are a good fit.  ARod for Crawford with some money exchanged?

I feel like whatever team takes A-Rod would demand the Yankees pay 90% of the salary.

Nothing on that but I don't think A-Rod agrees.   Hard to hit homers out in LA.

I think he's owed about 115m.   23m a year, on average, more or less.   He's a 12m player now.    Maybe a bit more than half sounds about right.

I don't know if any team agrees to pay much at all of his salary. Saw something online earlier that the open market FA value of Arod right now is roughly 1 year $5 million.  If the Yankees don't want to pay more than half of that salary they may have to chip in a significant prospect or two.

5m seems wrong.   He still had a +OPS at 3B.   But I do agree that no one would give him 5 years.

Buster Olney said he talked to 4 or 5 GMs and they all said his current FA market value is about 1 year $5 million.  I'm a lot more concerned with what seems right to those guys than you.
10/18/2012 1:58 PM
Why are you concerned?   A-Rod's value is nothing to be concerned about.
10/18/2012 1:58 PM
Any why is Buster saying "4 or 5"?  Does he not know how many GMs he spoke to?

You could probably argue he was still a 12 million dollar player this year, but he's really been in decline and hasn't been particularly healthy the last two years either.  I doubt you're going to get anyone to agree that even 5 x 10 is fair value for him at this point.  I think they'd probably have to eat at least 70-75 million of the contract, or send additional talent along - especially if he goes to an NL team that won't have the luxury of a DH spot available for him.  Stranger things have happened though.

If I'm a team looking for a 3B, my concern is more the $ in the later years.  I don't think I'd mind paying $10 mil next year, but its the money at the end that would concern me.

He's also shown he's injury-prone.  Over a full year? If he does what he did this year, he's a $10M player.  3B in their late 30s have trouble playing full years.  And if he's a DH, that $10M he's worth comes down hard.

I think he said "4 to 5."  As in, some GMs said 4, others 5.

There is some value, no idea what it is and I'm sure it would vary from team to team, if he can close the gap on Bonds.

And I do find it funny that Jeter was done, without question, about 15 months ago at the same age.    Different types of players but I don't know that we should close the door on A-Rod's career just yet.

That said, I bet it burns A-Rod's *** that Jeter will be given a key to the city and he'll get a bus ticket out of town.

Jeter rebounding the way he did was impressive, and goes against what normally happens to 38 year old infielders.  Which is why some people are yelling "STEROIDS" at the guy you'd least expect to take them.

I don't think the door should be closed, but to expect a team to pay 5 years/$50 mil for him seems very off.
