Since someone bumped a Ruth thread, is there any rational argument that another player was better than Babe Ruth?

Where is the vote for Jeter?

Wait til he retires.   His story is still being written.

That said, we know.

Mays is the only one you can really legitimately consider.

Sosa and McGwire were smacking homers at a similar rate as Bonds in the same era.   Ruth hit more homers than entire teams.

Ruth pitch'd...

Everyone else is Roy Hobbs, ---& fluff...

Hitting?  Maybe Ted Williams...

All-around?  Mays and Bonds were far superior in the field and on the basepaths.

We will never know with Bonds.

If you're going by stats, I'm sure there are a few other players you could make a case for. If you're going by impact on the game, it's hard to find an equal, unless you go with Jackie Robinson (though it wasn't Robinson's play that revolutionized the sport).

We will never know what Josh Gibson and other Negro Leaguers would have done in the Majors.

Nor will we know what I could have done if I hadn't discovered ***** and beer.

Perhaps we should just stick with what was done when attempting to figure out the best players.

Agreed.  I just want to point out that we will never be certain who the greatest was.

that's true....I'm pretty sure I am the greatest player of all time...except no team gave me the chance to prove it

also, Stan Musial was a better player than Willie Mays
