Mike Trout turned 22 yesterday. Topic

From Fangraphs:

This post is analysis free. It’s just a list followed by amazement. Here are the best hitters (by wRC+) through their age-21 season, all time.

Name PA AVG OBP SLG wOBA wRC+ WAR
Mike Trout 1,286 0.316 0.397 0.548 0.403 162 18.0
Jimmie Foxx 1,301 0.342 0.436 0.579 0.454 161 14.2
Ted Williams 1,338 0.336 0.439 0.601 0.463 158 13.8
Rogers Hornsby 1,200 0.316 0.372 0.455 0.397 150 14.3
Ty Cobb 1,839 0.324 0.362 0.440 0.388 148 16.0
Mel Ott 2,060 0.331 0.428 0.558 0.440 146 19.3
Mickey Mantle 1,552 0.295 0.384 0.497 0.401 143 12.9
Eddie Mathews 1,274 0.274 0.366 0.541 0.405 142 11.2
Frank Robinson 1,345 0.307 0.378 0.543 0.401 141 12.4
Arky Vaughan 1,210 0.316 0.382 0.448 0.381 131 10.2

That list is Mike Trout and nine players in the Hall of Fame. Through this point in his career, Trout has been better than all of them. This is only considering what a player does at the plate, and ignores Trout’s contributions in the field and on the basepaths.

To this point in his career, Mike Trout has been Ted Williams if Ted Williams was fast.

How? When he's had a worse BA, OBP, and SLG than Foxx, Williams and Ott?

He ranks them by wRC+, so it's ballpark and league adjusted.

I'm assuming it's adjusted to the park and league...I see it's ranked by wRC+.

He's damn good.  I'm assuming Ted Williams would smack the **** out of whoever put this post up and then insist Trout go fight in Afghanistan for a couple years.

hahaahahaha

Trout is great.  I bought my 1st baseball card in like 15 years last year, it was a platinum rookie insert thingermajig of Mike Trout.  He's Mickey F*cking Mantle.

FWIW, Ted took a relatively big step forward in his hitting from 22-on.  Good luck to Trout for keeping pace with him.

Kevin Maas, Shane Spencer and Joltin' Joe Charboneau are giggling at this thread over a beer.

I think that was part of Cameron's overall point. All of those guys got better as they hit their mid to late twenties. It's reasonable to assume that Trout will also improve as he approaches his peak.

Is Trout going to be able to produce a 200+ wRC+? No one knows but damn it will be cool if he does.

Oh man   Maas was the sh!t for a minute there

I wouldn't even begin to compare Trout to Williams as a hitter.  Noone has come close to him sice he retired.  Christ Williams hit like .390 when he was close to 40 and the game had been integrated...

Kevin Maas was 25 when he had 300 great plate appearances.
Shane Spencer was 26 when he had 76 great plate appearances.
Charboneau was 25 when he had 500 above average plate appearances.

Mike Trout has been hitting like a hall of famer at since he was 20 and has kept it up for over 1100 plate appearances.

Once again, one of these things is not like the other.

The same could  be said about the first post in this thread.

There's a long way between now and 9 of the best to ever play the game.

Yea, the difference of course is that Trout's been this good for 2 full seasons, rather than a couple months.  Remember the MVP talk last year?  Offensively, he's been better this year.

Also, and this has been part of my argument of pretty much ignoring defensive WAR - remember how he was one of the best in center last year?  Apparently he want from one of the best in baseball to below replacement level.  Yea, that makes sense.
