Small Hall of Fame Topic

Mike wants a small Hall. Let's give him one.

This Small Hall of Fame should include the absolute cream of the crop, 3 or 4 players at each positon, 15-20 starting pitchers, and 2 or 3 relievers.

Starting at shortstop, including active players, and ignoring PED issues.

Honus Wagner
Alex Rodriguez
Cal Ripken
Arky Vaughan

Disagree? Who do you kick out, who do you bring in, and why?

CF is the easiest:

Mays
Cobb
Speaker
Mantle

ARod is not yet HOF eligible, so he's out.

First is also easy if you stop at three:

Gehrig
Pujols
Foxx

Adding a fourth is harder. Anson and Connor, two pre-1900 players have strong cases, as do Bagwell, Thomas, and Thome.

Second base provides a clear cut off after the top 4:

Hornsby
Collins
Lajoie
Morgan

Yes.  I reject your "active players and PED" qualifications.

Your objection is noted. Moving on.

Third base probably has to go 5 deep:

Schmidt
Mathews
Boggs
Brett
Chipper Jones

So what's with the Beltre talk? Nice, we can move on.

Catcher is tough. You could make the argument that only one is automatic.

I think I'd go:

Bench
Carter
Piazza

Fisk, Berra, and Ivan Rodriguez also have strong cases. But adding them opens the gates to adding a bunch of similar guys like Dickey, Cochrane, and Simmons.

Three deep in left:

Bonds
Williams
Henderson

Sorry Yaz.
7/31/2014 3:11 PM
Five deep in right:

Ruth
Aaron
Musial
Ott
Robinson

So for position players we have:

Ruth
Aaron
Musial
Ott
Frank Robinson
Barry Bonds
Ted Williams
Rickey Henderson
Bench
Gary Carter
Mike Piazza
Schmidt
Eddie Mathews
Boggs
Brett
Chipper Jones
Hornsby
Collins
Lajoie
Morgan
Gehrig
Pujols
Foxx
Mays
Cobb
Speaker
Mantle
Honus Wagner
Alex Rodriguez
Cal Ripken
Arky Vaughan

There you go. I'll have to work on pitchers later.
