I agree but I'd say it's top 3 and a group.    You can certainly make a case for DiMaggio(had he not missed three seasons for military service, I don't think there's any question he's #4) and Ford.  But a strong case can be made for several other players(not Gomez at 4 or 5).  Including Jeter.

Pretty much.   Hit over .310, on base 38% of the time, team leader in all-time hits and has been a top player on 17-18 playoff teams over 20 seasons.  Obviously no argument can be made for top 5.

Who's hating?

Unless you consider calling Jeter the 6th or 7th best Yankee of all time "hating."

Anyone who says that Jeter is arguably higher than DiMaggio on this list is obviously high on whippets.

Meh.  I said I wouldn't argue it but oWAR has Jeter 22.5 higher than JD.   OPS+ is a 155 to 116 landslide in favor of JD.  How much value do you put on 7 more seasons and 1200 more hits?  Having a guy of Jeter's quality for 20 seasons is pretty nice.  Plug him in the line-up and let him play for TWO DECADES.  Not too shabby.

I thought "more" was "better"?

I'll reiterate that, had JD not missed three prime seasons fighting Nazis, he'd unquestionably be #4.

Do you not think more is better when it comes to most baseball stats?

Even with 7 less seasons, DiMaggio's WAR is 78. Jeter's is 72.

I'd argue the difference in something like OPS+ more than makes up for what Jeter complied in his career.  A difference of 155 OPS+ and 116 OPS+, this year, is about 150 points in OPS.  It's huge.  DiMaggio was a fantastic hitter in an era where there weren't many, and played a similarly difficult defensive position.

That's why I asked the value of another half career.    Do you want Joe D for 13 and whoever for the next 7 or Jeter for 20?

DiMaggio still had more WAR than Jeter, despite the shorter career. So yeah, I'd rather have him for 13 and a probably better than replacement level player for 7 than Jeter for 20.

A couple things, here.  Jeter's played 18 seasons.  1995 and 2013 don't count.  So now it's 18 seasons for Jeter to 13 for DiMaggio.  So basically we're asking the extra 5 years of Jeter makes up for Joe DiMaggio.  I'd argue no.

Put this in a different way - in what was easily Jeter's best year, he went .349/.438/.552, 24 homers, 37 doubles.  Monster year.  I'd argue he should have finished 2nd that year to Manny in MVP voting (somehow he finished 6th, and Pudge got 1st).  That was good for a 153 OPS+...less than DiMaggio's average season.  DiMaggio had a better season than Jeter's best (and it was easily his best) 7 different times.
