How do players who hold out complain with a straight face when their team doesn't budge? Disrespected because you signed a contract now you feel you've outperformed it? Too bad. Can owners hold out on players if the player sucks and they want to give them a paycut?

I've always liked Jones-Drew as a hard-nosed player, but this is ridiculous. Just like Revis this year claiming he was doing the Jets a favour by showing up and not holding out for the second time in 3 years. If Joe Schmoe called up his boss and said "I kicked *** last quarter. I'm not coming into work until you give me more money," he'd be out of a job very quickly. Cheers to the Jags for not giving in.

Joe Schmoe can't rush for 1500 yarsd and comparing football players to people like you and me is pretty silly.  Nor are our career's on average about 3 years long.  He could get cut without a cause or reason.   He wants a payday like other players have gotten, with some guaranteed money.  I don't blame him.  Only in football do I ever sometimes come down on the side of players, and to me, MJD gets a pass cause he deserves that guarantee.  Just my opinion

Can owners hold out? No they can just cut the player and not pay him in the NFL.

While I agree with most of what you said, I'm not interested in "careers average 3 years."   Then what?  They can't possibly find another line of employment?   Since when were athletes guaranteed to make all the money they'd ever need during their sports career?   I wish I could have made enough money at 26 to have never had to work again.

This is along the lines of Sprewell's "I gotta feed my kids."

FWIW, he can't win this.  JAX sucks with or without him.  The fanbase is apathetic.   JAX will find another RB.   They won't run 5 wides because MJD isn't there.  And they'll go 4-12, 5-11 anyway.

Maybe.   But I'd like to think I wouldn't be expecting a free ride from ages 30 to death. 

Of course, since most of them are broke after 5 years out of the league, I wouldn't say they're the smartest with their money anyway.

Whether you'd be expecting that or not, you'd be stupid not to take every opportunity to maximize your earnings while you're in that window, which is typically the point being made when the average career length is brought up. 

All that being said, while I absolutely have no problem with a holdout in principle, I completely agree with Mike that MJD miscalculated this and picked a fight he just can't win.  I'm not sure it's possible for a player of his caliber to have less leverage than he has right now.

I don't blame anyone for trying to maximize their earnings.    I'm just not interested in hearing "I only have 3 years" when you're 23 years old.   If you're not dying at 26, you have a lot more than that.    You have 3 years in that particular profession.    There are other career opportunities out there beyond "NFL player".   Well, there will be if we get a new Prez.

I'm not necessarily saying I blame guys holding out. If you think you're entitled to more, go for it. Just don't expect people to buy that you're a victim when you're making millions of dollars.

And Taint:  If that much money, even in 3 years, can't last someone a life time, something is seriously wrong. As Mike said, a lot of athletes (not all) spend their wad, and then when their bankrupt, act like they're entitled to more. I could live very comfortably for the rest of my life with a million dollars, as I'm sure most could. If someone wants to blow all their money on women, drugs, huge houses they'll never fill, cars they don't need, etc., that's not my problem.

A million bucks isnt that much money, less than ten years income for the wife and I and we hardly live an opulent lifestyle.
