I don't think this season's pick would have netted us anyone who made an immediate impact on the depth chart.
A 1st rounder couldn't have helped you?  Let alone a 3rd and I believe a 1st next year as well?
1st & 7th this year, 3rd rounder next year...

Helped with depth, sure.  We spent last draft's first round pick on a situational pass rusher, and the roster is stronger this season than it was then.  If we get one or two regular season games and the playoffs out of Harvin this season, it' still a net win.  For this year.  That doesn't even take into account the following years Harvin is under contract.

The one thing that worries me about the trade, now that Harvin is out for most of the year, is that Cordarelle Patterson was there with the 1st round pick we gave up (and went with that pick to the Vikings).  I don't have any illusions that Patterson is as NFL-ready right now as Harvin (were Harvin healthy), but I think he could have filled that play-making role this season, and might even have more upside than Harvin for the future (and either way would have been significantly cheaper, and likely less fragile).
As far as what we gave up, I think it was a reasonable deal for a player of Harvin's ability... it just sucks that he won't be seen most of the season (if at all).

I heard an interview with Pete Carroll this morning and he said Harvin was already "weeks ahead of schedule" on his recovery.  Whatever that means.

I never understand why anyone watches preseason games, let alone draw conclusions from it.

Offensive line got beat, defensive line got beat, and somehow we still won the game.  Happy with the W, not feeling super good about SF rolling into town this weekend.
