Because Romo chokes in the big game.  I'd put Rivers just below Ben and Eli on an all-time list, and I wouldn't have picked either Ben or Eli in MY all-time list yet.  Nobody said winning championships has no baring on the conversation.

But Romo's regular season performance makes him "an all-time great".  You keep using QB rating in your arguments!  Romo is in the TOP TEN!

But he gets those bonus Namath/Stabler points for nailing Carrie Underwood AND Jessica Simpson (when she was still hot)

Yes. QB rating is part of my argument.  I'm not sure I'd use it with Romo, though.  The best he's ever finished in QB rating is 4th in the league.  And obviously, he plays a game now where it's easier to rack up numbers.  But compared to QBs he plays with now, he's clearly not Top 5, let alone an all-time great.  And that's before we talk about him choking in big games, which brings his ranking down lower.

How does a QB win games, exactly?

- Don't turn the ball over
- Sustain drives
- Wear a defense down
- Control the pace and the clock
- If they stack the box, throw
- If they drop eight in defense, audible to run
- Run when necessary
- Hit the open receiver
- Hit the not-quite open receiver by putting the ball when only he can get it

I can do at least 6 of those right now.

Where do I rank on the all-time greatest QB list?

First, Romo is a good QB. If the Cowboys had actually won in the playoffs and won a Super Bowl, some of you would be proclaiming his greatness.

Should I ask which six you think you can do?

Don't turn the ball over

-          Bradshaw was in the top 8 for most interceptions thrown for 8 of the 12 years he started 8 or more games.

Sustain drives

-          I admittedly have no info on this.

Wear a defense down

-          Seems similar to "sustain drives."  If you sustain drives, you will tire the defense.

Control the pace and the clock

-          Sounds like another way to say the above 2 points.

If they stack the box, throw
If they drop eight in defense, audible to run

-          Was Bradshaw better at recognizing how many defenders were in the box than other QBs?

Run when necessary

-          Bradshaw did his share of running, yes.

Hit the open receiver
Hit the not-quite open receiver by putting the ball when only he can get it

-          He was top 10 in completion percentage just 3 times in his career.

Well it doesn’t seem like Bradshaw was a fantastic winner, based on your definition.
Could there have been anything else?

Of course, having a good line and running game are paramount to my success.   Sort of like every QB.

You really think you can do all these things?!?!

Amazing!  Frankly, Joe Namath couldn't do 1 or 6 on your list.

One thing I forgot is "Elevate the play of the team around you".

Namath threw a pick on 5.8% of his passes.
Bradshaw threw a pick on 5.4% of his passes.

Was Bradshaw much better at this because for every 250 passes they each threw, Bradshaw threw 1 less pick?

That's a vague term.  What does a QB do exactly, to do that?

Sure.   If the receiver isn't wide open, I throw it at his feet.  No turnover.

I'm not fast but I can probably outrun Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.   Slow *****.

The one you could dispute is "sustain drives".    There will be times that I'd need to throw a 20 yd pass accurately.   That could get ugly fast.   Although I do throw a better spiral than Tebow.

IMO it's useless to talk about interception rates.  Namath 5.8, Bradshaw 5.4.  Johnny U was 4.9.

The game was totally different.  Two WRs split left and right.  Only the rare back caught passes.  TEs were lumps except for rare ones.  NO slot receivers.  NO shotgun formations.  Seven step drop on everything, no fives or threes.  No hot routes against blitzes.

The passing game back then was about taking shots downfield against man coverage.  Yards per attempt were way up over today because it was about big gains.  No stacked WRs, no bunches, no scheming receivers open.  No stick routes or WR screens.  No six yard dump offs on third and ten.

Johnny U's career completion % was 54.  Today, you can't even get on the field if your minimum is 60.
