It is a bit inconsistent the 25 games Torres received.  Many worse hits were given far less this season.

That being said I hope this is setting a new standard and the league keeps discipline to this level.  I am all for long suspensions for these kind of dangerous hits - any dangerous hit whether to the head or the knees.
Torres getting 25 isn't so much about the hit, it's about his 'rap sheet'.   This being the 6th time  and 3rd time this season.  While I'm sure the fact Hossa was seriously injured played a part in the length, it wasn't the primary factor.

I think Shanahan has wanted to send a message right from spring training BUT has been handcuffed by a few very powerful GMs (who don't want to be named). Last night on CBC, a reporter confirmed this particular fact.  These GMs are NOT happy with this punishment.  But in this case, a 'rap sheet' this long and a very serious injury Shanahan (and his group) felt they could justify it.  Therefore did it.

I'm sure this is not over.  The new CBA is about to be dealt with this summer.  You can bet this issue will a big one!!

I'm in agreement with aginor.  It's fairly evident from the pattern that Shanahan wanted to hand out heavier punishment for everyone at the beginning of the season, and somewhere along the line he was told to back down.

The NHL head office has decided that this is Nashville's year (in the West), that's why Weber got off.  He is too important to the Pred's.  Torres is a throw-away, though.

Conspiracy theories are getting so old.  Especially stupid ones.

Don't worry, it'll all be over on Dec . 21 anyhow!

I think I read something about that.  Gretzky shenanigans?  I do find it hard to believe that the league would have passed up on a Maple Leafs / Canadiens Cup final though.
4/23/2012 10:49 AM
It was more important for LA to be in the finals.  There was a big push to expand in the US at that time, and Gretzky was as close to a household name in the US that the NHL has ever had.

I hope the Yotes stay in long enough for Raffi to start the season next year. It will be tough Vs the Preds though.
