Cuppa Joe Twist VII - FULL Topic

Cuppa Joe Twist VI is now in the playoffs... time to order up another venti four shot americano.

There have been well over 900 players in MLB history who have appeared in just one game... think Moonlight Graham.  Baseballreference.com has that list of players with the years and dates of those games in their "Frivolities" section under Cups of Coffee.  I've played in various Coffee leagues here over the years and they're always fun to research.  This one will play out thusly:

We'll be using players who appeared in just one game from 1885-2013.  Select a player from the "Coffee" list and note the year, date & team of his one appearance...  http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/coffee.shtml. Then go to that team's page (by year) and click on "Schedules & Results" to find out which team he appeared against on that date.  You can use both rosters for that year to make your team. Use any player that appears on either roster according to bbr.com, twisted to any season.

Ty Cobb strike game rule: On May 18, 1912 the Tigers played the A's and all of the Tiger players went on "strike" to support Cobb's suspension for attacking a fan in a previous game.  The Tigers recruited mostly college players to play the 5/18 game which resulted in several "cup of coffee" players for this date.  I'm going to allow one coffee player from this game per season.  This rule will apply for other games with multiple cup of coffee players as well.

There will be 6/2 below average AAA and depending on whether your Cup of Coffee guy was a pitcher or hitter, each team will call up one (and only one) AAA player and rename them to your Coffee guy's actual name.  No other AAA moves can be made during the season.  Your Cup of Coffee AAA callup must remain on the big league roster all season and have at least 25IP or 50AB during the regular season for your team to qualify for the playoffs.  I will allow each team to draft ONE 200K player if there aren't any twistable low salary guys on your 2 rosters... this player MUST be sent down for your one Cup of Coffee callup.

Blacklist - The Cup of Coffee players used in seasons I - VI are blacklisted.

When signing up, list your Coffee player's appearance date, year, team played for and against and stadium played in.

I'm back with John Braun who slurped down a cuppa joe with the Braves against the Pirates in the second game of a double header on 10-2-64 at County Stadium. I will play our home games at Forbes Field.

gyrene, Braun's game was at County Stadium that day with the Braves but their opponent was the Pirates, not the Cubs... did you still want to use him?

my error, indeedy, but yes, I will stay with Braun and recruit some buccaneers instead and play at Forbes Field. thanks. finn.

We've always used the actual stadium where the coffee guy played (unless not available in WIS) so it would be County Stadium for Braun.

My cuppa coffee only got a sip. Dan Jessee, pinch runner, Philadelphia Athletics @ Cleveland Indians, Aug.14, 1929 League Park II.
1/5/2014 2:24 PM
Roger Carey, New York Giants, July 9th 1887. The opponent was the Detroit Wolverines. He went 0fer4 and made two errors at second base, but somehow managed to drive in 2 runs. My team will lead the league in errors, I guarantee it. but I will have 10 hall of famers on my roster.

I think I will play in the Polo Grounds, but neither team's stadium is actually available in WIS.

This time I'll give Cal Browning a try, June 12, 1960, Pittsburg Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park, game 1 of double hitter. Browning ends up going 2/3 of an inning and giving up 3 earned runs for a career ERA of 40.50.

Welcome gyrene, fatboydad54, dweigel & dcmatcheck!

dcmatcheck, Roger Carey team can play in the earliest version of the Polo Grounds.

Finn - I'd like to jump in (TBD) still researching players but want to claim a spot.

I decided to go with: Kelly Heath - 4/20/1982; Royals/Tigers

Vince Gonzales (P) please. April 13, 1955 Washington Senators at the New York Yankees and Yankee Stadium (I). He pitched the last two innings of a blowout loss giving up 6 hits, 3 walks, and 6 earned runs. He was released 6 days later and went to pitch in Mexico.
