why would the Cubs hire a guy with a .220 career batting average, who struck out just about every third time (1409 Ks in 4513 PAs)up as an assistant hitting coach?  Does Deer have pics of Theo Epstien ******* a donkey?

His plate approach as a player was pretty damn good. Career walk % is around 12%, plus his OBP was consistently close to 100 points higher than his BA. Theo hired Deer based on his plate philosophy. Plus most of your good instructors never had great careers.

So how come Ted Williams was never a good manager or hitting coach?
How do you explain Leo Mazzone, one of the best pitching coaches of the last 25 years but never pitched in the majors?

This isnt a black and white issue.

Some great coachs were not good players.

Some where.

The ability to teach or lead is not the same skill sets as doing.
