Greatest baseball Team simulation Topic

Ok I know this isnt for everyone, so if you dont like the deep history of the game maybe skip this topic.

Call me crazy    but im going to try and do something I started a while back on these boards but was never able to complete. It may take a world of time but being the avid baseball historian that I am I am going to try and get it done. My task is to do a very detailed job in setting a competition to see what baseball team is the best team of alltime in the Word Series era as determined by Whatifsports. Becuase of personal reasons I have much extra time to devote to this issue and also am curious to see the results.

I will include 432 teams. The teams will be determined in a simple way, I will choose the best four teams from every season starting in 1903 and going all the way to 2010. All world series champions and pennant winners will be automatically included and will recieve automatic byes. The matchups will be best of seven serues with the winner moving on and the loser eliminated. The format will be as follows:
  • 216 top rated world series winners and pennant winners will recieve automatic byes.
  • Next tier of 216 teams will play against eachother and 108 teams will remain making the overall total 324.
  • All World Series wiinners and top 80 will recieve a second bye.
  • 108 winners of round one will play eachother along with 28 pennante winners.
  • With 256 teams left all teams will play down to a single champion.
It may seem complicated but Im going to give this a try and as things play out it will make more sense as we get to the final 256 and then it will be a straight elimination. I am making it this deep of a tournament as to include some of the lesser remembered teams and also create a situation for legitimate upsets and fun.

Hope you will follow. There will be nothing too elaborate, just results posted and quick stats. This will take a while obviously so hopefully you will be patient with me. Any feedback is as always appreciated.

I will post the teams shortly.

2/9/2011 12:40 PM
1981 Cincinnati Reds over 1910 NY Giants
Four games to one
MVP: Mario Soto

Getting a second chance means a lot for a team that never got a first one to begin with. The 81 Reds took this series in five games including beating John McGraw and the Giants three straight at the Polo Grounds. Stars emerged as Ken Griffey Sr hit .526 for the series and drove in five runs. George Foster had two home runs while Dave Conception used his glove to do the job but also batted .380.

Still the biggest hero of this series win was Mario Soto who wowed the fans and the Giant hitters with two complete games, including a three hit shutout in game five at the Polo Grounds. Soto struck out eleven and proved to be too much with the excellence of Tom Seaver.

I had the fourth tier teams in one pool and the third team tier in another and then did a random draw for the matchups. First matchup is in with the 81 Reds winning their series. The stats at the bottom are culmative for the series.

1906 New York Giants over 1937 Detroit Tigers
Four games to three
MVP: Christy Matthewson

This series had it all and went the distance with the home team winning every single game. “Matty” for the Giants was involved in four of the seven decisions as started two games while coming out of the bullpen twice.

New York started the series with two shutouts but at Navin Field the Tigers were overwhelming winning three in a row. Tigers manager Mickey Cochrane opted to manage rather then play but his replacement Rudy York batted only .193 for the series. John McGraw and the Giants finally got things right and won a tight one 8-7 in the crucial game seven at the Polo Grounds.

2002 Oakland Athletics over 1958 Pittsburgh Pirates
Four games to two
MVP: Eric Chavez

The Athletics get the better of the “Bucks” as they turned to the long ball in the series and eight home runs in the six games. Jermaine Dye and Eric Chavez each had three home runs in the series and as a team the A’s punished Pirate pitching for a .303 average.

There were some good games in the series as the Pirates tied the series at two games each after a walk off hit in game four. Frank Thomas hit .350 with three homeruns of his own but Bob Friend and Dan Gross had poor series as starters and the Pirates were beaten soundly in the end.

Four games to two
MVP: Tom Seaver (2-0, 1.13 ERA, 7 K)

The Reds surprise the Yankees who suffered from a very bad pitched series with a team ERA 5.52. The Reds bats were hot for all six games led by Dan Driessen who batted .370 and Ken Griffey Sr who hit .333. The Reds took the opener in convincing fashion scoring 13 runs off Whitey Ford and then won the next two to take a commanding lead. The Yanks thanks in part the Mickey Mantle who hit .407 with 8 RBI got hot and won the next two games but it wasn’t to be enough.

The Reds did open some eyes in this series as the team they beat was in the middle of its dynasty run and was expected to be among the strongest teams in the third tier. Terrific Tom Seaver was exactly that in both his starts that turned into Reds wins including the clincher.

1980 Baltimore Orioles over 1957 St. Louis Cardinals
Four games to two
MVP: Ken Singleton (.385, 3, 7)

After losing the first two games at home against the upstart Cardinals the Orioles turned the series around and won four straight games, including three straight at Sportsman’s Park, to win the series in six. The series was full of hitting but the Orioles righted the ship a little after they allowed 18 runs in the first two games. Jim Palmer made a key start in game 5 in which he pitched six shutout innings in the win.

In the deciding game with all the momentum at Memorial Stadium both teams were involved in a good back and forth battle but to lead off the bottom of the tenth we had our first walk off. Terry Crowley who had only two hits in the series led off the inning with a blast over the left field wall to clinch the series for Baltimore. Baltimore hit .289 for the series.

1909 Philadelphia A’s over 1986 Houston Astros
Four games to two
MVP: Chief Bender (2-0, 1.04 ERA)

Connie Mack and his Athletics are known for their dominant pitching staff and when you combine this fact with the spacious park like the Astrodome runs would be hard to come by. Chief Bender pitched two complete game wins allowing only one run in the process while the A’s team ERA was a sparkling 1.70. The Astros have good arms as well and did their best to keep up but it was too much to ask, Nolan Ryan himself took two of the losses and was rocked in the deciding game six.

Eddie Collins hit over .400 and Harry Davis hit two rare home runs in a series where great pitching beat good pitching.

No there are pinchhitters in ever game, I am just not posting every hitter that comes to the plate. I will start to do so as well as start to track stolen bases.

Thanks
