Will someone help me understand please? Topic

My Team Le Buccos was fortunate enough to make the playoffs. After not pitching in game 1 of the playoff series Kent Tekulve came in to pitch in game 2 to close out a blowout. He threw a total of 3 pitches.  After the game I went to my manager center and see this:

Kent Tekulve '77 (R)   84 (100) 91 8-5 3 87.1 4.84 .276 1.59 4.53 4.74 2.82M

Can someone help me understand why throwing 3 pitches would fatigue him so badly that he is essentially unusable in the next game?

As a general rule, don't expect pitchers to be able to pitch at 100% in back to back games.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that ... if he was 94% or something I could understand but 3 pitches took him to 84% that seems a bit extreme don't you think so?

As an example ... Jim Tobin pitched in the same game as Tekulve after also not pitching in game 1 .... he came in and threw 40 pitches and shows:

Jim Tobin '37 (R)   84 (98) 58 8-3 2 90.2 5.56 .302 1.81 4.96 4.67 2.96M

Does it make sense that a guy who threw 3 pitches is as fatigued as a guy who threw 40 pitches? Especially when the guy who threw 40 pitches threw more innings in the regular season and more pitches despite pitching fewer innings in real life?

Remember, there are multiple ways a pitcher can fatigue (overworked, tired from recent game activity, etc).

You're right ncmusician_7. Two of the more subtle ways are appearance fatigue - though that kicks in after a pitcher has appeared, I think, in two-thirds of a team's total games, and the exceeding of a pitcher's RL IP/G. This latter needs to be taken into account when setting pitch counts, as a pitcher who might be used in fewer games than in RL, say because they pitched in a 3 or 4-man rotation will now pitch in a 5 man rotation, nevertheless suffers fatigue if their settings go well over the IP/G they had in RL, say a pitcher with 4.5 IP/G being used for 7 IP a game will still run into problems.

Please post the RL and Regular Season stats of Tekulve.

IP, games, etc.

My guess is you probably used up more than his real life IP in the regular season, so you're on the "extended for the playoffs" IP

Here you go biglenr I'm pretty sure he's below both his IPs and total pitches

Yeah, I don't see anything obvious there.  I'd send a ticket asking for an explanation.

The explanation: RPs are (almost) never able to go back to back games at 100% in the playoffs, period.

Explanation for the explanation: Not quite sure on this one, though iirc I've heard that the 10% "cushion" doesn't apply to calculating fatigue for pitchers that pitched in the previous game... can get nasty without "booked" innings if so...
