D3 Piedmont in knight, I'm taking over for a very good coach who ran man to man, any baseline ratings for recruiting d3 talent for running the defense? where do I want them to be ratings wise....thank you

Well. You need to be much more careful about including weak defensive players in your lineup; they are much easier to exploit ...

First step: look at the players that very good coach recruited.  Second step: aim for that or better.

What would be a minimum rating to start with 20 with blue or is that too low? 40? 50? 70? to be in red potential? obviously you want the highest but what could i get by with?

The previous coach was a ghost coach the last season there is what i was told.....he didn't recruit so i have to make up two classes...I don't have a true soph to shoot for

39 or below will get you killed. 40-49 is weak. 50-59 is average and serviceable. 60-69 very solid. 70+ is very good.

is this just as a start out recruiting or is this what i want them to devlope  into?

That's a solid start.

Don't ignore speed, ath and blk though.   Defense is an equation with the DEF rating only being a part, albeit the biggest part.

With all that being said, defense at D3 can be a touch over rated.   I am a total DEFENSE whore but the offensive guys It's nearly impossible to land a 90 SPD/90 DEF guard at D3 but tons of 90 SPD/90PER guards are around.   I have found that my great defender (70/70/70)  matches up on that guy, the offensive player will take LESS shots and at lower % but they are still really good. 

The great defensive players merely act as speed bumps to the superior offensive players.

That's where you want them to end up.  So - if the guy has a starting rating of 20, he'd better have high-high potential *and* something like excellent speed and/or athleticism to complement that.

My mistake before - don't gauge by the players that are currently on that team, if you're talking about Piedmont.  They're not good defenders.  My bad.

Here's kind of the way I break down DEF in M2M. Early in their JR season they should be able to be:

D3 - at least 60
D2 - at least 70
Low D1 - around 80
High D1 - around 90

Now there are exceptions to every rule, but this is kind of what I shoot for.

And if you're starting at such a low rating make sure he has better than average WE or he'll be a three year nuisance and one year productive player
