So I just won the PIT but…. Topic

Ok, so I was probably one or two wins away from an NT bid but, sigh, it was the PIT for me this year. I rallied my players (and myself) and, five wins later, I watched as my kids raised the PIT trophy in pride at Madison Square Garden.

My program's prestige stayed the same. That's right, started at a B and ended at a B.

Seriously, what's even the point of this thing?

to give you (and the other PIT participants) something to do even though you had a bad regular season.

You played to keep it from dropping to a C+

Fair enough but I feel like if I would have lost in the first round I would have kept my B just the same.

This resume looks like a B to me. I don't see why you should be higher without any NT wins.

Congrats stiney on your one NT win over that same timeframe (against Jackson St.).

Your prestige is based on:
1) 50% your current season
2) 50% your current prestige

So, I'd guess that winning the PIT is considered a 'B' prestige range.   Since you were already at 'B', there was no change.

I won PIT and didn't change back a few seasons in Phelan:

57 guyo26 22-8 12-4 9-3 1-1 15-1   61 60 B+ Conf Champion
PI (2nd Round)
56 guyo26 26-7 14-1 9-5 3-1 14-2   37 70 B+ Conf Champion
PI Champion
55 guyo26 24-6 12-2 10-2 2-2 15-1   57 166 B+ Conf Champion
NT At-large Bid
NT (Sweet 16)

For perspective, I went to NT championship and went from C+ to A+ in Tark:

91 guyo26 27-4 13-0 11-2 3-2 15-1 14 7 15 A+ Conf Champion
NT At-large Bid
NT (Sweet 16)
90 guyo26 28-5 13-1 10-2 5-2 14-2 2 5 5 A+ NT At-large Bid
NT (Championship Game)
89 guyo26 18-10 9-4 8-5 1-1 10-6   175 342 C+
88 guyo26 13-15 6-9 6-5 1-1 9-7   213 203 B-

PIT really does very little to bump prestige.  I think it was discussed recently that it might be similar to losing first round of NT

Thanks jck! I've blown chunks at Indiana, but 3 NT appearances in the last 4 along with a higher baseline gives me an A-

Overrated… clap…. clap….. clap,clap,clap.

Seriously, too much prestige is given away for just getting to the NT.

Don't think the current prestige system jives with reality.

I agree with you.

+1

To make an analogy to reality: how many people here can name the last three NIT winners without looking it up first?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I had a long debate with seble about the prestige formula. He feels that the # of wins, regardless of SOS, is equally important to post-season success.

For instance, in 2011, VCU (27-12) made the Final Four. Utah State (30-3) lost in the 1st round.  Murray State (31-2) lost in the 2nd round.  seble considers the seasons of VCU, Utah St., and Murray to be equal in prestige

To copy davis' analogy, how many people can name any 30+ win teams that lost in the first weekend?

Each season, the TV commentators rave about Utah State's 2011 record. VCU is barely mentioned. LOL

and I couldn't disagree more.
The entire purpose of the game is to get into / qualify for the NCAA tourney.
Here and in real life.

Just eyeballing some past PIT champs and finalists, I think you're about right Al. Those who were at B+ before tended to stay at B+, and those who were at B- tended to end up at either B or B-. If OP had the same performance next season, I'll bet his team's prestige goes up because his 112 RPI season will be five seasons out at that point.
