Div-1 Realignment...? Topic

Thought if at some point HD wanted to put together conferences that somewhat match the current alignment of teams, that the list below could work.    Instead of 27 conferences, there could now be 29... the Summit goes away, and new conferences include the Atlantic Sun, the SWAC and the American.

Teams that are not currently in the listed conferences are shown in CAPS and UNDERLINED.   This would affect Div-2 somewhat, since teams have moved up to Div-1 since HD's original configuration.  Also, 3 current Div-1 teams would be left out-- Umass Lowell, UT Pan American, and NJIT.   But in this lineup, the top 8 or 9 conferences only have maybe 8 or 9 teams incorrectly placed.

Anyway, this may have been discussed before, but I couldn't find a thread on it.

Also, the format on this is hosed up...

It's a nice thought, but there's no good business reason to do this...especially moving the D2s to D1s...virtually impossible without screwing everything...I think the only way this flies is with an 11th world, and even then it's probably not likely.

You've done a terrific job with this!   A few years ago, I tried it  and it was a mess. Especially with the question: Where do I put Notre Dame??

Thanks guys. Yeah, could work maybe if there's an 11th world.
File this away for now.

The key I think is because conferences have to stay at 12, just put:
(this was the order they were placed)
Maryland back in the ACC,
Rutgers back to its A-10 roots,
Louisville stays in the American,
Mizzou and aTm return to the Big-12,
Syracuse and Pitt return to the Big East.
Notre Dame goes way back to the Horizon.
The WCC gets Seattle and Denver, which will probably happen anyway.
New Mexico State to the Mountain West,
Then it was basically filling in empty spaces, like the Valley gets Chicago and KC schools...
Those are the main ones

I think the coaches that are in Big 10 or Rutgers would lose in this lineup.  They are BCS status now.  This would take those schools away.  So I personally would be against it.  I feel if the schools are in BCS conferences now they should stay there.  This punishes those schools ie coaches that worked their way up to BCS status.  Would the American have BCS status in this lineup?  I dont think the American in Football would be considered BCS.  So in basketball they would get punished also. The WCAA is almost current but it's different than NCAA so I doubt they will make such drastic changes.  Also the Big Sky would be destroyed and the joy of that conference is that its a national conference so you don't battle to many schools in your conference.  Just my thought but good try ;-).

I never understood why they couldn't just make different conferences different sizes and just split the cash among greater or fewer teams.

Scheduling would be more difficult to program.  In a 16-team conference, who would you play?  If you played each team twice in your division, that would be 14 games. You'd only have 2 games vs. the other division. That's hardly fair to the team that plays two tough games instead of two SIMS.

It is much better to have it the way it is, there are no inherent advantages or disadvantages for over 900 teams...it's the best way to run this kind of business.
