what does it take to be a good 3 pt shooter? Topic

at the beginning of this season, i thought my team would be a great 3 pt shooting team, with high ath and per; above average spd and BH. the statistics are inapposite: 13 / 20 games we've shot < 40%. in those games, 8 teams played 0 or - defenses.

any tips or suggestions? (i'll share my 3 pt settings if anyone is interested)

From my experience, running a triangle offense appears the least favorable when it comes to three point shooting.

Luton is a sophomore and lacks speed and ballhandling. Gardner is really about average. Good perimeter, but inadequate speed and ballhandling to be a great three point shooter. Moats has excellent speed, good perimeter, but well below average ballhandling for a guard.

I didn't go in-depth to check each game and player that was guarded, but the 21 SOS might have something to do with it as well.

Also, other thing I had neglected to mention, you need a point guard with good passing ratings. From what I can see, you don't have anyone above 65.

Owen and Dacus need to stop shooting 3s.  If you're worried about the team %, look where the 3s are coming from.  You're good on Gardner and Moats, their %'s are fine, but the lesser guys just shouldn't be shooting 3s.

Dacus perhaps, but Owen has a good enough per that his percentage is liable to improve as the season goes on.

Dacus needs to.stop shooting threes because he has no speed.

Owen needs to stop shooting threes because he has no ball handling.

Dacus and Owen were both at -1 3 pt shooting. I guess even then they need to be reigned into -2?

If you adjust for 3-pt. shooting, only Luton is shooting worse from outside than inside.  His adjusted rating is 32.1%.   The others....Dacus, Gardner, Moats, and Owens are all hitting at 51% or better.

And your team 3-pt. shooting of 35.9%?  You'd have to hit 53.8% from inside to beat it.

Can you elaborate? Are you adjusting based on ppfg? Is there a simple formula you use to calculate it?

I tend to use 1.4 for erg rather than 1.5, to at least somewhat account for the extra free throws the two field goals get you.

Since 3's are worth 1.5x more points, they have more value.  I do the same as coach arssanguinus.....mutiple the 3 pt. shooting % by 1.5.

So, shooting 33.3% from beyond the arc will give you the same # of points as if you shot 50% in close.

If I want to compare a guards shoot% with a center's, I also use the efg (effective field goal %) that arssanguinus mentioned.
Say your guard has hit 14 of 30 (46.6%) for the season, which includes  4 of 10 from beyond the arc. Take 1/2 of the 4 and add it to the 14.  That makes him 16 of 30, for an EFG of 53.3%

My main difference is that I use 1.4 rather than 1.5 to account for the free throw opportunity cost of threes over the other shots which are more likely to garner free throws.

My Beloit team shoots 41% from three see if that helps with getting three point shooters.
