What a mess at the Univ. of Delaware....they haven't got a coach, nor have they hired the A.D. who will then HIRE the coach.

By Dana O'Neill, ESPN writer

In the end, it all came down to the number one.

That’s how many NCAA tournament games Travis Ford won in nine seasons at Oklahoma State.

That’s how many league games Brad Underwood lost in three years at Stephen F. Austin.

In three seasons with the Lumberjacks, Underwood finished 89-14, tying the record for the most wins by a Division I coach in his first three seasons. The other guy in that category? One Brad Stevens. That’s some good company.

Chip Patterson, CBS Sports:

The coach who is the best hire for his new school is ... Jamie Dixon (TCU)

The coach who is the best fit for his new job is ... Brad Underwood (Oklahoma State)

The coach who is most fortunate to land his new job is ... Josh Pastner (Georgia Tech)

GARY PARRISH: It's no secret that Pastner was on the outs at Memphis with his administration and fans. The only thing saving him was a $10.6 million buyout that Memphis simply could not afford to pay.

According to the contract, Pastner was obligated to pay Memphis $500,000 if he left for another job. But Memphis so wanted to make sure he left for Georgia Tech that it basically said, "Hey, forget about that $500,000 you owe us. Instead, we'll pay you $1.255 million if you please accept a six-year contract worth $11 million from Georgia Tech."

Amazing, right?

Memphis really paid Pastner $1.255 million it did not owe him just to make sure he'd accept a contract worth $11 million from Georgia Tech. S

The coach who is the strangest fit for his new job is ... Mike Dunleavy (Tulane)

The most surprising hire is ... Kevin Stallings (Pittsburgh)

CHIP PATTERSON: For about 15 minutes on March 22 fans believed that Pitt's replacement for Jamie Dixon, who officially took the TCU job the day before, might be Sean Miller.

Five days later, Pitt fans were introduced to Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings.

The coach with the biggest rebuild at his new job is ... Marvin Menzies (UNLV)

SAM VECENIE: UNLV fired Dave Rice back in January, was left waiting during a large portion of the coaching carousel after trying to get involved with Rick Pitino and flirting with Mick Cronin. They settled on Chris Beard, only to have him spurn the program and return home to Texas when Tubby Smith took Texas Tech. To replace him, they turned to Menzies, who has made the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years at New Mexico State. Seriously, that's pretty impressive!

The problem is, he's been left with a roster that has very little left. Basically, the Rebels and Menzies are currently left with only four signed scholarship players at the moment, with freshman Justin Jackson committed but not signed and apparently looking around and unexpected to end up there.

The coach with the best chance to win immediately at his new job is ... Scott Nagy (Wright State)

MATT NORLANDER: Maybe an off-the-radar pick, but let's acknowledge how good a coach Nagy is. He was considered by some to be a lifer at South Dakota State, but in reality that wasn't the case. Yes, he took the program from D-II power to D-I legitimacy. He averaged 23.3 wins over the past six seasons and made three NCAA tournaments.

The coach with the most pressure to win immediately at his new job is ... Tubby Smith (Memphis)

MATT NORLANDER: Like it or not, Smith will be under the gun right away. In terms of fan bases with expectations, Memphis is a top-10 pressure cooker of a gig in the country.
Best case scenario: Smith coaches eight years at Memphis and retires with one final run through college hoops, maybe a few second-weekend appearances in the tournament. Worst case? He stalls from the get-go, lasts just three seasons, and Memphis has to completely start over again, chasing the ghost of John Calipari.

Chivarsky Corbett waited several weeks while Delaware was looking for a new men’s basketball coach.

The 6-foot-7 forward decided he waited long enough and will transfer to Texas-San Antonio

The latest transfer comes to UTSA following a long lapse in coaches at Delaware. The Blue Hens fired Monte Ross on March 18 and are still looking for his replacement.

Delaware's lost another players while they are fiddle-faddling around with a coaching search

South Carolina has landed an elite transfer, but will have to wait a season until he can play.

Delaware guard Kory Holden, a 6-foot-2 second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection last year, committed to the Gamecocks.Holden is ranked No. 2 on ESPN’s Top-10 list of available transfers, will have two years of eligibility after 2016-17.

“ Holden chose the Gamecocks over Kansas, Virginia Tech, Seton Hall and Baylor.

From ESPN.com

By the time Marvin Menzies became the UNLV head coach on April 16, the Rebels were down to just two players on their projected 2016-17 roster.

Securing Menzies as head coach was three months in the making -- and one month later, it’s still unclear how long it will take the Rebels to truly dig out from the holes in the roster.

Now that Chrissi Rawak has been installed as athletic director, Delaware gets down to the business of finally finding a men’s basketball coach starting this week.It was two months ago Wednesday that Monte Ross was fired.

Sure enough, two of the candidates expected to be interviewed in Atlanta are Villanova associate head coach Baker Dunleavy and former Villanova associate head coach, now a 76ers assistant and a former Navy head coach, Billy Lange.

The News Journal has learned that a couple head coaches have popped up as candidates — Robert Morris’ Andy Toole and Albany’s Will Brown.

Delaware has typically leaned toward assistant coaches and that list of prospects hasn’t changed in two months — Dunleavy; Notre Dame’s Martin Ingelsby, highly touted by Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, the ex-Delaware coach; Xavier assistant Mike Pegues, the former Blue Hens standout; and Miami associate head coach Chris Caputo, the long-time Jim Larranaga aide.

But others names that have surfaced in that category are Washington associate head coach Raphael Chillious, who, as fate would have it, also recently spent a year on Jay Wright’s Villanova staff, and Duke assistant John Scheyer.

Agree! I'm surprised how many coaches are interested in that job. Their thinking may be, "If I can get them to the top of the Colonial Conference, which is a very acheivable goal, I can parlay that into a better school."

Delaware is a bigger school with a bigger athletics budget, I can see why a coach who believes in himself would tend to believe he could turn that into a positive change by rebuilding the team the way he wants it to be. And yes, now that VCU bolted, the CAA is a very winnable conference.

At BigAppleBuckets.com, Kevin Whitaker has offered to bring 4 other friends to help him coach Delaware Univ.

One of his ideas:

Disrupting Rhythm: Ivy League teams complain about shooting in cavernous Jadwin Gym, whose unique sightlines give Princeton a massive home-court advantage. By designing our arena with vision in mind, we can do even better. We’ll put optical illusions behind each basket and funhouse mirrorson the side walls. Our student section will use scientifically optimal distraction methods, not just for free throws but on all outside shots. We’ll even paint the out-of-bounds area to look like water, with sharks poking out to make players think twice about diving for loose balls. Our team will get used to the arena’s quirks by practicing there every day, but opponents won’t even know where they are.
