According to The News Journal, Villanova Wildcats associate head coach Baker Dunleavy is expected to interview for the Delaware Blue Hens coaching vacancy. After a rough few months, the Hens have finally appointed a new athletic director and are now set to start the hiring process for a basketball program that is falling apart.
Dunleavy's name has been floated as an option for Delaware before - but that was prior to a transfer exodus that has left Delaware with just five scholarship players on the rosterand no incoming recruiting class.
Thus, it's really no surprise that Delaware wants to speak with Dunleavy. He's a rising coaching star coming off a National Championship and is familiar with the area. Take away all of Delaware's problems and it isn't a bad job at all. The CAA is a good mid-major conference, Delaware (at least publicly) wants to invest in basketball, and it's located near fertile recruiting grounds. Not a bad place for an assistant to take a crack at his own job.
But the current situation with the administration and roster turnover makes this seem like a bad bet. I have a hard time imagining that Dunleavy - or even other candidates like Notre Dame's Martin Inglesby - would want this job. They can probably do better if they're ready to be a head coach, even if they have to wait until next season to see what jobs become available.
