How low would you go? D3 - PG - ATH Topic

I fudged up recruiting and now need to pick up a couple scrubs for my D3 Press/FB team.

There are a couple PGs who could turn into 20/90+ but I don't know if that low of athleticism is too big of a fault to take on. Other guards are around 30-40/60-70, maybe that's better?

I like 20-90 PG's the speed really works well in the press, 40-80 is better, but I'd probably take 20-90 over 30-80 if all else is the same. 30-60 and 40-70 aren't great the 20-90 guy has at least elite speed where the other 2 are just kinda meh in both categories.

It must be pretty good! I see 20-90 PG's all the time in my D3 world, and they seem to really do well Press/FB teams.

Depends on the other scorers but there are certainly sound reasons for taking a PG with a 20ish ATH.

I don't take 20s ATH. You can give me all the reasons to take him you want, I still don't touch them.

20s is fine for D3, especially if other cores are superb. I don't want a team full, but it won't hurt for a player or 2 - if their other **** makes up for it.

ETA: especially at guard. I'm much less enthused about an unathletic big.

at jsa's level, hes right. but, that is the level you all should aspire to, not the level you are at, and you have to be realistic. for d3 coaches who are only human, i think 20 ath can be justified, but essentially, you'd really want that player to have great spd and per. you can justify crap defensive abilities when you have a guy who is a great scorer. if you are strapped - fb/press can really strap you, you cant just take a couple walkons like everyone else - you can take a guy with that 20/90 but he has to have at least good passing to play pg, if he doesn't have that per. otherwise what can he do? literally, not one thing well? thats not a good player to have on any team.

although, if he has strong def rating... strong def/spd is sufficient to be a solid defender in d3 press. so you can slide by with a bit less. ath/def are so tightly correlated in this game, however - that the low ath high def scenario is highly unlikely.

so you'd take the 30/70 or 40/60 guy

We all know they are all below your normal guys, but given a choice of the 3 and ratings same elsewhere where do you land?

I'd rather have 40/60 over 30/70 and 20/80 given the choices, but the choice you describe doesn't really exist. I don't recruit players whose low end final potential isn't good enough. Is a 20/80 guy worth a roster spot with someone if he's 90s PER/BH/PASS/ST? Absolutely. But unless he started out blue 60s/70s in all of them I'm not taking the chance (and even if he did, I personally would still go elsewhere unless I couldn't find anything whatsoever resembling what I consider a guy worth recruiting). That's just how I build my teams.

20/90 but doesn't make a difference for you.

so between these two guys:

Devon Rush

31 ath 97 spd 37 def 98 per 99 bh 80 pas

and Dennis Smith

Who will hit 52 ath 63 spd 53+ def 61+ per 82+ bh 63+ pas(so lets assume 52 ath 63 spd 53 def 90+ per/bh and 80 pas since he has that potential still)

you are sticking with player 2 in the press?

Likely you wouldn't have taken Rush without knowing his potentials with his ath/spd being black at 17/81 and def/per starting at 16 and 30, really only the bh/pas was a given. I'll try and find better examples even though it doesn't matter since I know you are taking the 5/60 guy every time

WELL IT'S TOO LATE NOW I SIGNED THE 20 90 GUY. AND TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER HE'S AT 17 ATH WITH LOW POTENTIAL SO HE MIGHT NOT EVEN GET TO 20

To be fair, I've won a championship at D3 with a starting pg who had Ath in the teens and defense below 30. He was mid 90's in speed and perimeter and high 80's in BH and passing.

Poncho, and that's a guy I admit is worth having on a team. He just doesn't make my team because (A) I don't want to deal with that kind of player before his offense develops, and (B) he's a real problem to have if his potential disappoints and he doesn't turn into an elite offensive player. That's part of why my teams compete every season and skip down years.
