Moving within D1 Topic

My goal has always been Big 6. I'm at low D1 now, in my third year at Navy, and I'm seeing half a dozen or so Big 6 schools that should be a C- after the current season. What will it take for me to get considered by these struggling Big 6 schools? One NT? Two?

Just trying to get a feel for how difficult it is to move within D1.

pallas, take a look at my UMBC history in your division. After that mild run of success I qualified for D+ schools which included some lower end Big 6 schools at the time like Oregon and Hawaii...I think Minnesota at the time also.

Two NTs and a PI in four years got you D+ schools. Good to know. Thanks, man.

FWIW I qualified for 'Nova after I had taken UNH to 7 of 10 NT (basically two in one out for a while) and a B+ prestige. I applied when I had made 6 of 9 with a B prestige and was not taken. The next year I made the tourney again, had a good overall season and got that B+ and they hired me.

Yep, I was gunning for the Oregon job the whole time I was at UMBC and as it figures another owner beat me out for that job so I just went to another mid major in a better conference.

"Rupp : 6 seasons at University of NH. 3 1st round NT's, 1 PI3, 125 wins (20.8 wins/season) went from D to B-. Got me to Michigan, not elite, but have chosen to stay here vs move to A prestige teams
Smith: 9 seasons at University of NH. 4 1st round NT's, 1 PI1, 173 wins (19.2 wins/season) went from D- to B-. Got me to Georgia, at that point couldn't get into higher Big 6 teams, no openings.
Crum: 5 seasons at Harvard. 2 1st round NT's, 2 2nd round NT's, 99 wins (19.8 wins/season) went from D to B-. Got me to Cincinnati, my first (and currently only) A+ baseline prestige team.
Baylor: 11 seasons at D2 W Alabama. 4 1st round NT's, 3 2nd round NT's, S16, E8, NT runner up, 1 PI1. 241 wins (21.9 wins/season) went from B- to A. Got me to Baylor, where I got my brains beat in. Should have stayed in Heartland D2." guyo26

From Weber St, should I focus on staying there for 4-5 years, then going to a better mid-major?

It really depends what your end game is. If you want a Big 6 job, I'd stay at Weber St. and build them into a team that can make the NT every year. If you went to another mid-major, even if it were better, it would take you a couple seasons to get established.

For sure. In my scenario, I would probably take over some team that a human coach had just left--a C prestige mid-major.

You're basically looking at 8 seasons to get to a power six school min.

Took me 8 years at low D1 to get Big 6 jobs. I think I could have gone to the C- Big 6 jobs after 5 or 6 seasons. In my low D1 jobs I had 1 season losing record, 1 season PT, then made the NT for 6 years before I left for Clemson/Florida.

There are going to be some crushed BCS schools soon. Lots of vacancies. Here's 5 seasons, no NT appearances, that I took to get to NCSU:
Season 84 NC State Div (I) - ACC;Overall Record: 6-21;Conference Record: 4-12;RPI: 182
Season 83 UAB Div (I) - CUSA;Overall Record: 22-9;Conference Record: 13-3;RPI: 83;PI Tourny - 2nd Round
Season 82 UAB Div (I) - CUSA;Overall Record: 19-12;Conference Record: 8-8;RPI: 92;PI Tourny - 1st Round
Season 81 UAB Div (I) - CUSA;Overall Record: 14-15;Conference Record: 7-9;RPI: 88;PI Tourny - 1st Round
Season 80 UAB Div (I) - CUSA;Overall Record: 12-16;Conference Record: 7-9;RPI: 151
Season 79 UAB Div (I) - CUSA;Overall Record: 16-11;Conference Record: 6-10;RPI: 163
Season 74 St. Thomas Div (III) - Minn. IAC;Overall Record: 18-15;Conference Record: 9-7;RPI: 38

Granted, NCSU was beyond decimated before I took the job, but I would say the minimum is 5. The only question now, assuming nothing changes in recruiting, is whether an NCSU is better than a Weber St.?

Cubcub : get to big six from WSU. Do not start over at a better baseline prestige mid. I think it will push you back three to four years.
