Non-Conference Games and players of the Day
7/15 : #21 W. New Mexico 68 - #5 Concord 74
The post tarv era begins with a thrilling victory over a ranked team. Concord pounded the lanes, getting to the FT line 33 times while only attempting 2 three point shots. Odinan Ahmed, the "Kenyan Minion", led the team with 21 points on 7-14 shooting. WNM pulled within 4 point three times in the last two minutes but could not get over the hump and get into OT.
7/16 : W. New Mexico 61 - Fairmont St. 70
Can we not have a game of the day? Out of 12 games this was the only outcome with less than a 10 point spread. Was it interesting? Not really. Did any players have a great game? NOT! In fact, other than W. New Mexico being listed in the game of the day for the second straight week, there is absolutely nothing to talk about. But good win none-the-less pumpkin!
7/17 : UAM 64 - #21 Bluefield St. 71 (OT)
Down by 8 with 3:17 left in the game, Bluefield put on a furious rally to send the game into OT. It helped that UAM was completely inept in those last 3 minutes, only scoring 3 points. The press was unimpressive and Bluefield went to the line 42 TIMES thanks to 33 fouls by UAM.
7/18 : Bluefield St. 61 - Mount Olive 64 (OT)
Back to back nail-biters for haasdr. This one was not so lucky. Neither team shot worth a crap and committed 32 turnovers combined. One could argue that neither team should have won. Bluefield's leading scorer had 14 points but on 5-14 shooting...so nothing to write to mum about. Let's see if they can have 3 OT games in a row!!!
7/19 : CSU, San Bernardino 64 - D&E 62
D&E trailed the entire 2nd half until a basket by William Quinn put them up 59-57 with 3:16 left in the game. Apparently the celebration was too much for them and they could only muster 3 more points the rest of the game. The nail in the coffin by CSUSB occurred with a jumper from the FT line as time expired. This one cold have gone either way.....it just went the other way.
7/20 : California U. 53 - Glenville St. 56
A dominating defensive performance by Glenville, holding CU to 38% shooting and 5 FTs while committing only 8 fouls. Despite the effort, they had to withstand a flurry of 3 point attempts (30) to seal the win.
7/21 : #10 Concord 71 - #4 Lincoln 77
A battle of two top 10 teams didn't disappoint. Concord had a slim 2 point lead at half-time thanks to strong guard play, but Lincoln came out of the locker room on fire and took a 5 point lead just 5 minutes into the half. The lead was 8 at the 6 minute make when Concord made their last stand. They were able to pull within 2 several times but their defense could not make the stop needed to get the possession needed to tie.
7/22 : U Pittsburgh, Johnstown 65 - Charleston 68
UPJ came out strong and built a 7 point half-time lead as Charleston couldn't hit the side of a barn. Charleston stormed back in the 2nd half while dominating both the boards and the turnovers. Offensively they had balanced scoring with three players scoring +14 points.
7/23 : #13 Concord 71 - Mercyhurst 69
Concord closed the first half on a 16-6 run to open up a 13 point lead at the half. The stingy zone defense of Concord held Mercyhurst to just under 38% shooting and they committed only 6 fouls leading to 5 FTA. The fortunes of Mercyhurst reversed from the floor in the second half as they began to find holes in the zone and converted 61.5% of their shots. Tied with 3:44 to go in the game, Mercyhurst soon seized their first lead since midway through the first half. The two teams exchanged points over the next few minutes keeping it close but Concord took the last possession with 14 seconds to go and Odinan Ahmed hit the game winner as time expired from the left block. (thanks favre)
7/24 : #6 W. Virginia St. 71 - U. of the Sciences 72 (OT)
A 7 point WVA St half-time lead fizzeled as their offense threw up a pathetic 17 points in the 2nd half. As crappy as that was they still had the ball and a 3 point lead with 40 seconds left in the game. But a TO and 3 point shot later (against a +5 defense) and the game was in OT where they went down like sheep.
