D3 Rankings - Season 78 - updated 2/22/15 Topic

I can only imagine the lead J Dub must have now.

Here is the list based on seasons 56-60.

There are 10 new schools.... although Johnson St. should have been on the list last season too.

Louisiana and Susquehanna are tied for 13... the tie-breaker is usually the determined by the team that did best most recently.  Amazingly, they have the exact same results the past 5 seasons in NT, so I just left them tied.  I think I got the other tie-breakers correct.

I also added the total score column, so you can see how close you are relative to other teams.

sweet!  Made the list

Brian, does the formula take into account anything prior to the last 5 seasons?  I'm also curious how it's weighted if you can explain in brief.

Thanks for doing this.  Gives me something to shoot for.

Thanks for doing this- sweet to be on the list.

To qualify, must make post season 4 out of past 5 seasons (PT or NT).

=(I2*1)+(H2*0.9)+(G2*0.8)+(F2*0.7)+(E2*0.6)

This is the formula - 100% of the points are counted from the most recent completed season.  90% from 2 seasons ago, 80% from 3, 70% from 4, and 60% from 5....

The points are all based on how far team advanced in post season.

Point values:

national champ - 38 points
runner up - 35
final four - 32
elite 8 - 28
sweet 16 - 25
second round - 23
1st round - 22

PIT winner - 24
runner up - 23
semis - 22
3rd round - 21
2nd round - 20
1st round - 19

My modification of non-post season point value (slightly different than Al's):
If one year the team doesn't make the PT or NT:
conference regular season champ - 13
rpi better than 100 - 12
101 to 132 -- 10
133 to 175 - 9
less than 175 - 6

tie breakers - most recent season, and keep going backwards if still tied...

Interesting.  I kinda figured recent seasons were weighted more heavily, but I guess not.  I think sweet 16 and higher should be weighted more.  Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it definitely favors more recent seasons, but not by a huge amount.  The NT/PT points assigned are exactly what Al Black does.

He does something slightly different for a season that a team misses the PT or NT... but I found it kind of confusing.  So I just made up those criteria, loosely based on his method.

PIT winner shouldn't be worth more than 2nd round NT.  I also think if 2nd round is 23, sweet 16 should be more like 30.  Then E8 - Champ could be between 35 and 45.  But that's just one guy's opinion.
