Thanks ash. I'm using the 28 mpg season of Ward for sure. Not sure which Gasol season to use. Had to go with a low usage pg like Ward to have enough $$$ for the bench players and to get close to 19.500 minutes. I like the team so far. Gasol is really clean player and adds assists which I think is useful at this cap level.

One correction - guys with high FTA don't reach their RL free throw numbers, but guys with low FTA will often reach or exceed their numbers. The SIM just does a very poor job distributing FT attempts between high and low usage player.

But again, you can't just say you don't care at all if a guy makes a FT or not. You can minimize your consideration of ft% (for the reasons you just mentioned) but not ignore it entirely. Surely, if two (hypothetical) guys were completely equal in every category, but one had a 52.1% efg and 60% ft, and the other had 52.0% efg and 80% ft, you'd take the second, because he's going to score more efficiently even if both only take 150 FT or so.

I don't think it's the sim.  When a low foul defender faces a high FTA offensive player, something has to give.
and rather than the ideal  of both sides giving a little towards some middle compromise position what happens as often as not? Shaq takes two FTAs or Wilt fouls out in 18 minutes

which is to say, it's the sim

I only check FT% for a problem, ie team shoots <70%, I also look to see if I have a high frequency FT shooter with <70FT%. If everything else looks good the team is ready to go. I check FT% last, but I do check it & it must meet certain parameters. Leave no stone unturned stratagy.

I'll leave this to ash and some of the others, but isn't the idea in the sim to do the usage points and not just add them up to get over 100?

Having said that, I would feel good about this team too.

Read the forum post about usage that Ash started in 'sim league basketball'

good question, jh, but i try to get to an optimal usage of 100-110, this also depends alot about the players u have and their mins played. i was building around jordan, which means to me, i've gotta give him room to operate. i wanted to go with one of my favorite pg's who boards and plays great def and shoots a few 3's, but his usage was too high and would have taken away from jordan. still, 107% is a nice percentagre. could be wrong, though.

I pay more attention to my usage distribution than I do to team totals. I like a high usage player inside(C or PF) & outside(SG  or PG), and a 22-24 @ SF. I also like to keep all my shooters alittle hungry. That way if one shooter's under heavy defensive pressure one of the other players can easily pick up the slack. Using an in side/out high usage allows control over defensive pressure. On SIM you cant put defensive pressure on both sides. if you pressure my high usage Center, my high usage PG scores 36 pts and vice a versa. If your defense is lacking both my Center & PG score 36 pts. The 24usage% SF, keeps everybody honest...   ;--)

Also, too much usage cost money at the expense of other stat's, you could have used the extra money to buy more defense. lol

Here's a good one - creigel and I were playing, in what may turn out to be a preview of the conf finals, I lose in a 134-130 OT. Now check this out, in the OT creigel's team scored 17pts in 5 minutes, my crew scored 13 pts in 5 minutes, that's 30 combined pts in 5 minutes. Averaged 6 pts/min for 5 minutes!!! The fans must have loved it.  Talk about production per minute, we blew the place up @ 1pt every 10 second!!! Should have seen the pbp, all bold print. What's defense...???

I should say that I consider 26-29.9 usage% high. I typically don't draft a player with +30 usage%. Their counter productive to good ball movement, IMO.

It is amusing to read the smokey theories on the basketball sim.

I already gave directions to read the most useful threads on team building, better for us if they don't read them I suppose.

reminds me of natenoy a little bit... absurd reasoning, yet nate produces winning squads pretty consistently. perhaps smokey will be the same way

Yeah, you can produce respectable squads with absurd reasoning without really understanding what is actually happening.  I'd like to see the promising new(er) owners hone in that reasoning a little and turn playoff trips to playoff 'ships.
