CVAC - Heartland Challenge #5 (Season 61) Topic

OK - Here we go..............here are the games to schedule for CVAC - Heartland #5. (Season 61)

Because the two Yarnell teams in season are of different seeds (Bel Abbey and St. Marys), there's no need to mix up the #1 and #2 seed this season.
If any of you need to switch weeks, just let me know. Too late to post proper final standings, unfortunately, but I ranked by previous RPI as always. Have fun!!

Week 7

No respect for The Mont.

I see you have BA penned as a yarnell team, so I'm setting my schedule too.
9/26/2012 10:52 AM
I just assumed based on your e-mail, hacker. However, if crashdive declines the yarnell, I'll join and just schedule my game week 10, so it won't make a difference on our end.
9/26/2012 11:54 AM
ok, that will work. just keep 5-9 open until I get a commit from B-A
9/26/2012 12:03 PM
looks like Mt. Olive is ghostshipped, which makes the Ok. Panhandle St. vs. Mt. Olive game difficult to schedule.  Any solutions? We might have to just leave Ok. Panhandle out of the 5th challenge if this is the case, unless  there's a better way.

Preview time!

Lincoln @ St Andrews Presbyterian (-24):  Coach detfirecat put Lincoln in the post-season for the first time in 30 campaigns last season, but Lincoln has fallen on hard times this year.  Lincoln is still looking for their first win, although covered the spread in their last game by 30 (that they still lost by 36 to #3 Lander is another matter).  Detfirecat relies on the backcourt of Eric Brown (11.8ppg), Billy Mckinnell(11.3ppg), and John Burns(8.5ppg) to run the FB/Press attack while the youthful post players develop.

Yaklyn68 has St Andrews off to a 3-1 start, with the sole loss versus ranked W Liberty State.  SG Ralph Cox (13.8ppg) leads the way, while SF Dale Faulk & PF Charles Steve each contribute 8.3ppg.  Lincoln will have their hands full with St Andrews' flex/zone-press, although the 3 guard attack may help.  In their 4 games this season, St Andrews has yet to have a game decided by less than 12 points.

St Andrews has been outscoring opponents by about 15 ppg.  Lincoln has been outscored by almost 20 ppg.   The Heartland has a tough matchup, as oddsmakers favor the CVAC team by 24.

Anderson @ W. Florida (-37):  Rumor has it wildcatjackm is still the coach of Anderson, although only assistants have been seen on the bench this season.  Predictably, the team is is in disarray, off to an 0-4 start with the closest margin of defeat being 12 points.  The team's man/motion attack features only 10 scholarship players, with SR PG Rodney Britton jacking shots at a furious pace (26.5 ppg), no doubt in an attempt to get a look from the CBA/Europe/your local rec league.  PF Richard Rozanski chips in 13.5 ppg.

Caesari has W Florida off to an excellent 3-1 start this year, including a win over ranked W Liberty State.  Their man/motion attack is fairly balanced, with 4 starters scoring at least 8 ppg, lead by SF Steven Fagan (12.8 ppg), and PG Vernon Royster (12.0 ppg).  This is one of the best starts caesari has had with W Florida and they look to make it 4 wins in a row tonight.

With Anderson in shambles, W Florida should be licking their chops.  Oddsmakers like the Heartland team by 37 in a potential rout.

No conference has more wins that the CVAC's 32 this season.  The Heartland is tied for 6th with 28.  Let the Challenge begin!!!
11/24/2012 4:43 PM
St Andrews 89, Lincoln 59:  St Andrews blistered the nets all night long, shooting 61% from the floor, 48% from deep, and 88% from the line while cruising to a 30 point win.  Four of five St Andrews starters were perfect from the floor, and the 5th (Ralph Cox) led the team with 19 on six of ten 3-point shooting.  Christopher Heppner & Charles Pauls each had 12 for coach yaklyn68.  St Andrews had 21 assists on 25 baskets.  Lincoln's young big men couldn't hang on the boards, getting out-rebounded 33-13.  Eric Brown had 15 points to lead Lincoln.

W Florida 89, Anderson 42:  This one was over early, as W Florida's 49 1st half points were more than Anderson mustered the entire game.  Anderson shot 29%, "led" by Rodney Britton's 19 points on 6-of-24 shooting. Royster & Fagen chalked up double-digit scoring totals, as did 3 bench players for W Florida.  W Florida dominated every aspect of this one.  A scout for the Harlem Globetrotters was seen in the stands, looking at a possible replacement for the Washington Generals.

CVAC 1, Heartland 1.

Night 2 preview:

Limestone (-8) at Oklahoma Panhandle State:  Brianxavier and Limestone roll into Goodwell, OK looking to get back on the right track after losing their last two games by a combined 7 points.  Limestone's flex/man attack boasts 4 double digit scorers: James Liu (17.2 ppg), Melvin Jarnigan(11.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg), William Pratt(16.6 ppg, 5.2 apg), and Michael Bently(10.4 ppg).

Jaledarrett's FB/man OKPan team is led by senior duo of PG Ronald Lee (19.8 ppg, ) and C Randy Robinson (12.8 ppg, 8.0 rpg).  They are looking for their second win on the season after an overtime loss last time out.

Limestone has lost some tough games to quality competition.  Oklahoma Panhandle's five opponents have a combined six losses.  This one shapes up better than the records might indicate.

#15 Coker at #22 Valdosta St (PK):  Warshot brings 5-0 Coker to Valdosta in this matchup of marquee teams.  Coker doesn't have a single senior on the team and is led by 4 double-digit scorers:  William Johnson (15.2 ppg), Justin Ferguson (14.4 ppg), Lee Kelly (13.8 ppg), and Donald Harris (12.2 ppg).  If they are ranked this year, you can only imagine what they'll be like next season.

Alazer will attempt to defend homecourt by playing solid defense and relying on C John Gupton (15.4 ppg on 60% shooting).   Coker doesn't have a lot of depth in the front court, how they handle Gupton may be the key in this one.

So is limestone playing twice? Ok Pan St. was scheduled against ghost-shipped Mt. Olive on Night 2.

I thought my challenge was against West Alabama on game #10.  I think I just happen to be playing another Heartland team.  I think we should count it though
11/26/2012 8:32 AM
My bad.  Did that while falling asleep.  We in the Heartland are definitely fans of not counting that one!
11/26/2012 8:42 AM

Coker 67, Valdosta St 64:  So just the one game last night, but it was a good one.  Valdosta's press clamped down for the last 8 minutes of the first half, only allowing 4 points, riding the defense to a 37-28 edge at halftime. Valdosta's Miroslav Wadzinski picked up his 4th foul at the 10:00 mark of the 2nd half, with Valdosta still up 55-47.  Coker climbed back into it on the strength of a 10-2 run over the next 5 minutes, knotting it at 57.  The lead swung back and forth until Coker's Lawrence Hoffman drilled a 3 with 1:07 remaining to take a 63-61 lead.  Valdosta's Edward Costanza was fouled in the act of shooting with 0:24 left and had to opportunity to tie it with 2 free throws.  The transfer from Iowa, a perfect 10-of10 from the line on the season, calmly stepped to the free throw line and....bricked both of them.  The intentional foul and free throw game started, Valdosta made a desparation 3 late to provide the final margin of 3.

CVAC 2, Heartland 1.

Night 3 Preview:

Montevallo at Longwood (-18):
Muskienut37 takes Montevallo to Farmville, VA to face #6 Longwood.  The Mont's triangle press scheme is led by the trio of Scott Foster (14.2 ppg), Bradley Garnica (10.2 ppg), and Hugh Situ (10.0 ppg).  Montevallo's 2 losses have been to ranked teams (Mercyhurst & Cal Poly Pomona), but muskienut37 hopes to break that string tonight.  Montevallo has been outrebounding  opponents by 9 per game.

Fresh off a national championship, bbunch has put together a typical Longwood team.  Fun fact (unless you're muskienut37):  Longwood has finished no lower than 7th in RPI 8 of the last 9 seasons.  Longwood owns wins against ranked SE Oklahoma St and Incarnate Word (although that was decided by a single point), with the lone loss coming versus New Jersey Tech.  Michael Schizer (13.0 ppg) and Robert Byers (12.8 ppg) provide the offense for Longwood.  Bbunch's team is holding opponents to 39% shooting.

Lees-McRae at N Alabama (-7):  Dennyj brings ten scholarship players and ten underclassmen into Florence, AL to battle #23 N Alabama.  Despite the extreme youth of Lees-McRae, dennyj has them at 3-3.  Three players score in double-digits:  The lone senior Alexander Merritt (12.2 ppg), plus sophs Cory Shaw (12.7 ppg) and Joseph Hayes (10.3 ppg).  Coach is doing a nice job with limited talent this season.

Ragizzy has N Alabama running on all cylinders this season.  The lone blemish on the record is a loss to undefeated and currently #10 Cal Poly Pomona.  N Alabama owns a victory over ranked Adams St.  Opponents have to contend with two towers in the middle of N Alabama's motion/zone:  Augustus Ziller (18.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and William Hogan (11.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg).  Darnell Lesher provides the outside threat (11.0 ppg, 47% from 3).  N Alabama's five seniors may make things tough on the young Lees-McRae squad.
