I'm just going to come out and say it.....this is the Heartland's year. If they don't beat us in the challenge this season, I don't know when I see that happening.

We definitely have a very good opportunity to finally take the Challenge.  The Heartland looks unbelievably brutal this season.

I've had decent record in the challenge, but this is one season I expect to go down hard. Hopefully my Heartland buddies can pick up the slack. Go Heartland!!

Young Limestone takes on a team as good as any tonight when they face Valdosta St in the first game of the Challenge. Despite having zero seniors, Limestone is fresh off a double overtime loss to #11 Augusta St. Their "Sweet Cannon" backcourt will need to play well to have a similar chance against #3 Valdosta St. Senior guards Gary Miller and Joseph Hastings lead the way for formidable Valdosta. Oddsmakers like alazers Valdosta team by 20 over brianxaviers Limestone squad.

Valdosta 73, Limestone 57:  Limestone was going to need some breaks to win this one, and it appeared they might get them early in this contest.  During the first 2 minutes of play, Valdosta was whistled for 5 fouls, enraging the partisan home Valdosta crowd.  Then at the 15:30 mark tied at 2-2, Valdosta's Joseph Hastings leaves the game with an ugly shoulder injury.  Exhorting his teammates on from the sideline, Valdosta proceeded to put their hardhats on and went to work.  Picking up the slack for his missing mate, Gary Miller drops 8 dimes and leads the team with 13 points.  Bradley Sweet managed 16 points for Limestone, but Valdosta held them to 39% from the floor.

Heartland on the board, 1-0.
6/12/2013 8:55 AM
Mount Olive (4-0) at Lincoln(1-3):  Mount Olive has ridden a fastbreak and press attack that runs twelve deep.  Their balanced attack is fresh off an upset of #14 Augusta St.  Lincoln is only 1-3 on the year, but don't be fooled by their record:  their first three games were against ranked teams.  They managed to pull off their win against #18 UNC, Pembroke and covered the spread in all three games.  Lincoln employs the same balanced 12 man rotation in their motion/press attack.  Oddsmakers like undefeated Mount Olive by 12.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-0) at Anderson (0-4):  Collecting the required 14 wins to qualify for the NT in these conferences can be tough, but OKPan is off to a perfect start with a quartet of road wins.  Anderson is still looking for their first win, but two of their losses were against road teams and they dropped at one point heartbreaker against Clark Atlanta. Super athletic defender OKPan SG Brandon Berry is a matchup problem for most teams.  He also leads OKPan is scoring and manages a healthy 6 rpg.  Versatile Anderson SF Anthony Kuehner is lethal from both inside and out, leading his team with over 14 ppg.  Oddsmakers take OKPan by 19, but this one looks like an interesting matchup below the surface.

Mount Olive 74, Lincoln 64:  Detfirecat's Lincoln team jumped out to an 8 point lead during the first 3 minutes of play, as wvufan76's team had trouble solving Lincoln's slowdown motion press.  Wvufan pulled his starting 5 off the floor for a butt-chewing and the 2nd team sparked a comeback, drawing even at 10:37 and playing a competitive half afterwards.  Lincoln grabbed an early lead again in the 2nd half, but managed just 4 points over the final 8:29.  Mount Olive's John Chapman led the team with 12 points and Mount Olive dominated the boards 36-26.

Oklahoma Panhandle 81, Anderson 63:  This one wasn't as close as the final score, with the lead building to as many as 29 before khook19 called off the dogs.  Edward Sisto got plenty of playing time off the bench to lead OKPan with 18 points.  Anderson actually had 3 players reach double figures but shot just 39% as a team.

Heartland 2, CVAC 1
6/13/2013 8:53 AM

W Florida (4-1) at St Andrews (3-2):  W Florida has been getting it done in the clutch this season, going 4-1 but only outscoring their opponents by less than 3 ppg.  SG Brett Pauley leads W Florida with 11.4 ppg, with evenly distributed scoring from the rest of the 2 deep.  St Andrews is led of Soph SG John Jenkins' 21.2 ppg, 10th in all of D-II.   Adam "The Salad Shooter" Saladino adds 13.2 ppg.  The oddsmakers make this a pick'em, although St Andrews is yet to play a game decided by less than 8.

W Florida 91, St Andrews 83:  If you liked free throw shooting, this was the game for you.  The two teams combined to make 58 shots from the charity stripe, at a nearly 80% clip.  This game was back and forth nearly the whole way, although the tide turned W Florida's way at the 6:37 mark when St Andrew's Saladino fouled out as Jack Shawver converted a traditional three-point play.  St Andrews starters began to drop like flies at that point:  SF Arthur Oja (5:28), and the backcourt tandem of Jenkins & Oliphant in the final minutes.  Each team mustered four double-digit scorers.  C George Daigle led all scorers for St Andrews with 21, while PF Jack Shawver & PG Ron Rhodes each had 15 for W Florida.

Heartland 3, CVAC 1
6/14/2013 9:06 AM
Belmont Abbey 84, Incarnate Word 71:  Belmont Abbey took over and completely outplayed Incarnate Word in the 2nd half, putting 53 of their 84 up during the second 20 minutes.  Matthew Blassingame led BA with 21 points on only 5 field goals.  IW's versatile Chad Walker couldn't stay on the floor, fouling out in 9 minutes.  With Walker hampered by foul trouble, IW couldn't hang with BA in the second half.

Coker 83, Rockhurst 63:  Coker dominated throughout, as Rockhurst was ice-cold from the perimeter, missing 9 of 10 shots from three.  Thomas Guillen led Coker with 15, while 4 bench players scored in double digits.  Daniel Perkins scored 15 points inside for Rockhurst, but simply had no help.

All tied up, 3 each.
6/16/2013 9:14 PM
W Alabama 65, Lees-McRae 55:  W Alabama held the nearly all the way in this one after an early LM advantage.  Lees-McRae hung around most of the contest, but was not able to threaten W Alabama's backcourt of Roberto Rossi and Thomas Freels, who combined for 29.  Steven Rashid dropped 24 like they were hot for Lees-McRae, but had zero help.  Away from Rashis, LM shooters went 11 of 36 (31%).

Heartland 4, CVAC 3 going into tonight's battle royale:

Erskine @ Drury (-1)
Montevallo @ Longwood (-1)
#15 Barton @ #16 N Alabama (-1)
St Edwards (-4) @ Pfeiffer
Queens U (-1) @ St Mary's

All narrow spreads that could easily go either way.  Should be fun!
