CVAC/Heartland Challenge season 74 Topic

OK. This will be an unusual one. We planned this a little late, so setting an exact schedule won't work.

Also, there are 2 sim AI's in the CVAC, and 1 in the Heartland. I will seed accordingly, putting the SIM AI schools last.

The teams will be ranked by season 72's RPI, as always. However, Sim AI teams are ranked last, so every other school is shifted up.

Remember, schedule these games any week you want

#1 St. Mary's at #1 Longwood
#2 Limestone at #2 West Alabama
#3 St. Edwards at #3 Pfieffer
#4 Queens at #4 W. Florida
#5 Incarnate Word at #5 Lees-McRae
#6 Belmont Abbey at #6 Drury
#7 N. Bama at #7 Erksine
#8 St. Andrews at #8 Valdosta St.
#9. Lincoln at #9 Barton
#10 Coker at #10 Montevallo

#11 Ok Panhandle St. draws #11 Mt. Olive, but they are a sim....so I suggest we just do the top 10 seeds.

Queens 47, W Florida 45: The first half was a back and forth affair with seven lead changes as both muskies85 & fussyd elected to slow the pace. W Florida led the first 19:51 of the second half, losing the lead on a three-point dagger by Joe Williams with 9 ticks left. Fussyd called time and got a good look for William Dorsey, but Adam Peck swatted it at the rim. Fouls & free throws provided the final two point margin in a heartbreaker for W Florida.

Good game fussy. A low scoring slugfest. I typically prefer to get out and run but just don't have the depth this year. I suspect many games similar to this the rest of the year for us.
9/3/2014 9:26 AM
Incarnate Word 78, Lees-McRae 54: Incarnate Word jumped out to a two touchdown lead at 21-7 and didn't look back. SG Shane Nally had 21 while PF Irv Hayes had 19 point, 12 boards, and 5 blocks for IW. Lees-McRae's starters managed 20 points and shot 34% as a team. Antonio Ackerman came off the LM bench with 14.

Valdosta St 70, St Andrews 59: Valdosta simply had the better press, doubling up St Andrews 36-18 at one point during the first half. St Andrews attempted to mount a late charge to slice the lead to single digits, but Valdosta was just too tough. Valdosta had 12 points each from PG Stephen Nicholson and PF Earnest Gilbert. SF Harry Parker had 14 for St Andrews.

Valdosta moves to #2. The Valdosta versus Incarnate Word games in the Heartland West could be epic,

Heartland 2, CVAC 1
9/4/2014 8:53 AM
Pfeiffer 71, St Edwards 65: St Edwards recovered from a 13 point halftime deficit to take the lead with 9:07 remaining. Eds had no more in the tank, scoring one point in the next 5 minutes. Pfeiffer's 3 guard set of Taylor, Cortes, & Thomas totaled 50 points. Pfeiffer pulled the rare feat of shooting better from the floor (59%) than the charity stripe (51% on 20 of 39).

Heartland 2, CVAC 2.
9/6/2014 8:42 AM
Longwood 59, St Mary's 51: Longwood managed to keep St Mary's at arms length during the second half and escape with an 8 point victory. St Mary's dynamic duo of Barry Morgan and Frank Fried, accounted for 35 of st Mary's 51. Longwood's Erik Scheuette and Larry Norman countered with 31, and simply had more help from the supporting cast.

Erskine 57, N Alabama 44: Erskine wore down N Alabama in the second half, holding N Alabama to 2 points during an 8+ minute stretch of the second half. Erskine played team ball, generating 11 steals and 16 turnovers. Lawrence Holliday had 17 in a losing effort.

CVAC 4, Heartland 2
9/7/2014 10:44 AM
Drury 67, Belmont Abbey 59: Belmont Abbey ran out of gas in the second half. Drury overcame a 6 point half-time deficit to win by 8. Brandon McDunn led the way with 14 for Drury. Belmont Abbey's James Whidden had 16 and Al Moore 15, but it wasn't enough as Belmont Abbey committed 25 fouls versus Drury's 10.

CVAC 4, Heartland 3
9/8/2014 9:13 AM
Coker 73, Montevallo 65: Coker made a living from the line, making 28 of 36 attempts in their 8 point win over young Montevallo. The Mont starts zero seniors and came up a bit short against one of the more talented team in D-II. SF David Cagle led the way for Coker with 19 points, going 9 of 11 from the charity stripe. Peter Long chipped in 16 for Coker.

CVAC 5, Heartland 3
9/9/2014 9:18 AM
Barton 78, Lincoln 63: Barton put the defensive clamps on Lincoln in cruising to a 15 point win. Lincoln shot only 34% from the floor and 24% from three-point land on 9 of 38 shooting. Barton's Stephen Schwark cleaned up all those caroms, snatching 16 boards while three teammates scored in double digits led by Bob Godina's 15. Lincoln's Loren Stokes had a game-high 19.

W Alabama 51, Limestone 50 (OT): A really good game? YES. An offensive display? Not so much. Limestone's Dan Whitehair strokes two three-pointers with under 0:25 remaining in regulation to force OT. Other than a Whitehair free throw, those were the only Limestone points during the 5:00 of regulation. It's not like W Alabama was setting the world on fire in the final 5:00, getting 4 free throws while Limestone was intentionally fouling. W Alabama's William Fowler banked in a layup with 0:04 remaining in OT to provide the final margin.

CVAC 6, Heartland 4.

Congrats to the CVAC on another Challenge victory.
