I hate OSU.  I hate sweater vest.  Indifferent to Pryor.  But this article ****** me off (http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/ohio-state-buckeyes-terrelle-pryor-selfish-always-motivated-by-money-sex-and-power-060711).  This jacka$$ is appalled that a 18 year old kid wants "sex, money and power" in a system of old---VERY OLD---institutionalized money, power and Viagra-less sex.

Can anyone explain to me why NCAA athletes---in any sport---should not be paid?  And not a friggin scholarship....paid whatever the market will pay.

These kids are treated like criminals for accepting compensation for their talents. Have you checked out the compensation for professional football players in comparison to other sports?  Jamal Charles was the second leading rusher in the NFL last year.  He made $470,000 for 16 regular season games, pre-season, post-season and off-season.  14 Milwaukee Bucks---yes the Bucks----each individually made more than Charles last year.  Fourteen Milwaukee Bucks made more than the second best rusher in the country's most popular sport.

Screw the NCAA...screw the schools.  Especially when you "play" a sport that cuts your life short.  Get paid and get paid well.

if the kids want to get paid they have that chance. go to europe or canada and sign on with a team. If Pryor wanted money, he could have had it. But he wanted his cake and to eat it too, and he can't have that. If he wanted to stay in the USA and go to OSU, then he knew the rules. If he wanted the money, he had the chances.

they get paid stipends, books, education, travel, clothing, food, etc... in all athletes get paid tens of thousands of dollars a year without any marketable skills except being good at a high school sports. In essence they are raking it in when more deserving 18 year old are doing much more and getting absolutely nothing.

jamal charles signed his contract, if he doesn't like it, that's his problem. he should have signed a shorter one then.

i dont have a problem with college athletes getting paid...but lets be honest...the only athletes that would have any chance to be paid are the athletes in the programs that make money...mens football and mens basketball...and a few other random programs like womens basketball at uconn or soccer at north carolina...thats it. also we as a society would have to accept many other college sports at many universities ceasing to exist...because as we all know the mens football and basketball programs pay for virtually all of the other college athletic programs...so if the "basketball and football money" is going towards paying those sports players...then that obviously leaves no money for golf, rugby, volleyball, softball, track, etc...

Andrew, very good points. And I bleieve you would be correct if athletes were ever paid. However, "Title IX" has already beaten you to the punch.  This bull$hit law has severly crippled my favorite NCAA sport -Wrestling.  I only keep up with wrestling but I am sure mens soccer, lacrosse, baseball,  swimming, diving, track, and golf can't be doing well either.

I agree with equality for women but lets face facts.  There are and never will be as many women athletes as men.  So, mens scholarships have to be matches by womens scholarships.  The only problem is with football soaking up so many schollies and the lack of "WILLING" female athletes to equally match the mens scholarships; the less popular mens sports offer less schollies.   In turn this creates a domino effect.  Lets use wrestling as an example.  The nations top wrestlers fight tooth and nail over a small pool of schollies.  Schools end up with less talented players or none at all.  They slowly slip down the rankings until eventually they suck and eventually disbanded.

My home state of Virginia is down to 4 wrestling teams.  UVA, VA Tech, Old Dominion, and Liberty.  15 years ago there was over 20.

Title IX was a solution but NOT the right one.  The death of many to save a few does not seem logical.   Thank you clinton era!

Hmmm, you would rather have colleges filled with atheltes that can't read or write getting free rides while bright kids can't go for lack of money? A portion of those atheletes will get a gazillion dollars because they can play a game and can't hold their own in a 2nd grade spelling bee, while quite possibly the Doctor that could save your childs' life, or the researcher that could find a cure for cancer for your grandmother, or the President that could straighten this country out, will never get the chance because they can't afford to go to school to learn. What's wrong with this picture? College atheletes get paid plenty without being greedy just by getting their tuition, books, lodging, and food.    Terrible Pryor is the worst thing that happened to OSU since Maurice Claret.  How's he looking now Tressel?  Cam Newton is nothing but a pervert and a criminal.  These are the guys you are championing.  These Colleges go out and kiss these kids' ***** and goodly percent of the recruits are felons.  College sports are AMATEUR Sports.  That means NO PAY FOR PLAY.

I still have to give Tressel his due.  He was a good coach.  For the most part his teams were well prepared.  He executed his gameplan. He had MANY athletesdrafted into the pros.  As a football coach he is very good.  As an upstanding man he is lacking.  I haven't liked him since he screwed over Beckman for Terrible Pryor.  He ruined a young mans' career who had led his team to a NC when they had no business being there to cater to Pryor and his father.  I think he is getting his come uppance.  Bully for the NCAA.

Div 1a majors is big business. The money it rakes in is multi millions. Programs in lesser sports are supported by those funds.A elite few of the athletes will go on to be pros the vast majority will not and most will leave the schools not much better off educationally than when they went. Many will suffer as they age with the injuries that the sport is played with. The question here has to be are these young men fairly compensated?

Teams must play by the rules that said are these rules lopsided in favor of the institution? Clearly they are and have been and are getting worse as the sport revenue stream contracts with T.V. ,radio, sky box, coachs shows continue to become more and more lucrative. Just what group or organization really looks out for the student athlete?

No one does thats who.

Basically it is a grand entertainment where the stars get housed and fed for free while they also get to study some courses that in most cases will do little to nothing in the form of aiding them educationally and vocationally. While they put it all on the line every week for 80,000 fans in the stadium and millions on T.V./Radio.

The only thing I can say to this is that no one is putting a gun to their heads and making them go play college football.  Maybe they are being used, but they are the ones allowing it.  They get the opportunity to showcase their skills in hopes of going professional in their sport, along with a free ride.   How many other students going professional in something besides sports have that opportunity?  There is no way to win this argument because as long as there is competition there will also be cheating in some manner!   Unfortunate but true!

Potter, this is all just part of tOSU's spin campaign. It HAS to be a problem with the athlete, because otherwise it's a problem with tOSU. Look at the facts: tOSU isn't in trouble because of what the "Tat 5" did. They've already been punished for that. They're getting pounded because of what Tressel did (coverup), and what Smith and Gee failed to do (lack of institutional control). They can't come out and SAY that, though, because that would mean tOSU is the problem. They figure 2011 is shot anyway, and they'll only get another half a season out of Terrell, so let's blame it on him. That way, when he leaves, the problem leaves with him. Smith and Gee can then declare the problem solved, and go back to business as usual.

I'm pretty sure colleges offered other sports long before football earned billions of dollars a year.

No one is holding a gun to their heads so that makes it all fair and equitable?

How much money did the other free scholarship academics earn for their school? How many had to also cut the school grass ,wash the windows all before and after class while going to school? Remember these athletes practice and work out non stop.

At the end who makes out the free ride Doctor or the lawyer or the free ride athlete who did not get drafted?

+1,  if they dont wanna go to school then dont sign a scholarship.  Whats a 4 or 5 yr scholarship with lodging, clothes, trips/vacations, food worth if they had to pay for it.  $50,000 a year?  thats a pretty good salary for doing what you love.  D1 athletes choose to go this route,  if they wanna get paid pick a different route.

Im just jealous I cant do what they can :-)  I would love to be a 3rd string LB for IOWA,  that was my dream

What other route? Frankly it is this type of logic that will always keep student athletes on the short end of the stick while schools make millions off of their services.

Name one other top entertainment industry that pays its stars room and board. Not condoning breaking the rules I am saying the rules are out dated and one sided these div 1 a elite athletes are as close to be professionals as you will find and earn the schools muti millions.
