OK, I for one would like all Elites to go-away, however what we have is what we have.  However, how about updating the current listing - specifically:

Removal of:

Penn State --- self-explanatory, especially in light of the recent independent report.  We wouldn't glorify other types of programs built on the ignoring the inexcusable (oh that German Army/Industry in the 40's was one of the best...)

Tennessee --- still trying to figure out how they made it in the first place

In 2003, Tennessee was a perennial top ten program and was just five years removed from a national title.

Tennessee ranks 5th all time in bowl victories, 9th all time in total victories, 10th all time in win percentage, etc.

Yeah Tennessee deservED to be on the list, but not anymore.

And Michigan deserves a good long look as well.

So I guess it was a toss-up Tenn and Utah when the game was created, and we would be saddled with Bosie State and Wisconsin if it was created today. Let's put Army and Syracuse as an Elite while we are at

I kinda suspect Conte just cribbed Stewart Mandel's "Kings, Barons,..." list from five years ago. In his latest list, he removes Tennessee, but doesn't add any new Kings of College Football.

False. 3 years of bad football does nothing to justify your statement.

+1
Michigan's history speaks for itself. Removing Michigan from the list of elite programs is like saying George Washington was not one of our country's founding fathers!

That's a little much. While there are great traditions there, would you consider Army to be elite? I think they should be if Michigan remains.

They are a storied program, but the last few years no longer make them elite.

In the case of Army its far more than a few years.

Michigan had 3 or 4 mediocre years. Army has been a joke for 45 years or more.

Michigans's worst years would have been deemed a success at Army.

Based on this rational and that going in the other thread GD should just give Penn State the death penalty. Forget about elite status.

Based on the same rational every American of German, Italian and Japanese decent should be persecuted too.

Tennessee should be tossed out.  They have had four losing records in the last sixteen years.  They have finished in the top ten two times in the last 18 years.  They have been 2-10 in bowl games in the last seventeen years.  Only 1 National Championship in the last 24 years.  And only 1 Heisman trophy winner in the last 48 years.  With that track record, they should be...[my research assistant whispers into my ear]...really!?  Damn, my bad.  Apparently those figures apply to Notre Dame.

My felings are that elite=a national following irregardless of recent history, now you look at a former elite school like UCLA that hasn't been relevant for decades then yes I would agree dropping them but nobody is there yet.
