Week 3 Game of the Week

Yale vs Villanova

This week provides lots of great match-ups but we chose this one because of importance. Yale is coming off a surprising loss to Elon, and 'Nova is looking to prove a point. The Wildcats have enjoyed some nice recruiting classes since jt73walsh took over, but there has been a lack of post-season success. A win here, could position the Wildcats for a top three seed. On the other side, Yale is looking to bounce back after an awful showing last week. I had this team ranked really high to start the season, and I still think they have the most talented roster. But if they don't pick up a win here, they might be watching the postseason for the first time since 96. Harold Haynes leads one of the most exciting rushing attacks in the country, that averages over 400 yards per game. While Villanova is led by sophomore quarterback, Russell Williams.

My prediction: Yale 24 'Nova 20

Week 3 Review

Jacksonville, AL:  4 seasons since a loss. In their last 78 games, they've won 78 times. The Jacksonville Gamecocks are the most dominant team in a decade. In week 4, that streak was put to the test. On a trick play, Zachary Ferguson broke open on a big run and ran 46 yards for a touchdown. At halftime, Jacksonville State held a comfortable 13-0 cushion. But Morehead State roared back early in the second half. With 4:11 to go in the 3rd, David Skinner completed a two yard pass to Joshua Parker in the end-zone, cutting the Gamecocks lead to 3. With 5 minutes left in the 4th, the game was tied at 13 a piece. Then a big drive, led by Joseph Nelson, ended in a game winning touchdown. Jacksonville State escapes with a 20-13 win.

New Haven, CT: After suffering a tough loss last week, Yale came into this game with a need to win. At 5:25 left to go in the first half, Villanova scored a field goal and put the score at 9-6, in favor of Yale. But by the time the first half was over, Yale took a 19-6 lead. Some big runs by the duo of Harold Haynes and Shane Snyder extended Yale's lead to 32-13, with just 3 minutes to go in the game. However, Villanova was not about to give up on this game. Some big plays down the stretch, followed by an 8 yard run by Stephen Green cut the lead to 12. Then with just 40 seconds left, Russell Williams hit Christopher Rowland on a short pass, and cut the lead to 5. The onside kick was weak, and the Bulldogs recovered. Yale hangs on to win 32-27.

Offensive Player of the Week:  Kevin Wang - Sacramento State - 234 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns

Defensive Player of the Week:  Eugene Padilla - Holy Cross - 7 tackles, 2 INT's, 2 Pass Deflections

Week 4 Review

Worcester, MA:  Last week, Villanova came up short against an IVY great. This week was a completely different story. Not even three minutes into the game and Russell Williams hit David Long on a 13 yard pass play that resulted in a touchdown. Holy Cross would answer though. A 5 play, 80 yard drive, led by Dan McCoy put the Crusaders on top, 14-13. However, that would be the last time that Holy Cross touched the scoreboard. Villanova on the other hand, answered again, and again, and again. The Wildcats cruise 36-14.

Cookeville, TN:  A week after almost pulling off an upset that would have shaken FCS football, Morehead State received a test from Tennessee Tech. In the 2nd quarter, Jesus Meyer threw one to Jeremy Garrett for 28 yards and the touchdown, putting the Eagles up 14-0. But before the half could end, Tennessee Tech would answer after a big pass from Jerry Lyon to Robert Fitzgerald, cutting Morehead State's lead to 7 at the half. The Golden Eagles kept it up and scored early in the 3rd to tie the game at 14 a piece. They weren't done either. Jerry Lyon hit Robert King and King took it 33 yards, and to the house, giving TTU a 21-14 lead. With just a minute to go, down by ten points, David Skinner threw a bullet to Jeremy Garrett for the touchdown. Despite recovering the onside kick, Morehead State was unable to score and Tennessee Tech gets a big win, 24-21.

Washington, DC:  A battle of elites ensued in the nations capital. Neither offense was able to budge until three minutes to go in the half. That's when Georgetown's William Stein threw a bomb to Christopher Rivera for 58 yards. On the next play, William Fitzgerald ran for 30 yards and Hoyas found their way to the end-zone, taking a 13-3 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, the Rattlers would answer. Robert James threw it to Walter Perry, and Perry took care of the rest, gaining 68 yards and getting the touchdown. But the Rattlers couldn't garner any thing else offensively. Georgetown gets the win, 16-10.

Offensive Player of the Week:  Robert Oakes - Jacksonville State - 505 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Week:  Richard Scott - Colgate - 11 tackles, 2 INT, 2 PD, 1 TFL

Week 5 Review:

Amherst, MA:  10 minutes had gone by in the 1st quarter before anyone even scored a point. At that moment, Michael Sherman hit a 29 yard field goal to score the first points of the game. From that moment on, UMass never looked back, scoring 31 points in the 2nd quarter to hold a 41-0 halftime lead over Morgan State. In a valiant effort, Robert Young broke open an incredible 65 yard run, early in the 3rd to give the Bears some life. But that would be the only time that Morgan State would even sniff the scoreboard, as Gerald Jones threw one interception after another, totaling 6 INT's. Final score: UMass 47 Morgan State 7

Hamilton, NY:  NC A&T came into this game riding a surprising 4-0 start. If you had asked johnmut what he thought of their start to his first season at the school, I'm sure he would have told you that he wasn't surprised at all. This team has been clicking exactly how he coached them to. However, beating teams like McNeese State and East Tennessee State is one thing, beating a team like Colgate is a completely different story. The Red Raiders started this game off with a bang, when Johnny Crawford hit  Michael Cooley for a 43 yard pass. That drive ended in a Colgate touchdown. And Colgate wasn't done, they scored 5 more times before the half was over, giving them a 38-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs continued to struggle on offense and the Red Raiders continued to score. Johnny Crawford played like Johnny Football and threw for 400 yards and a pair of TD's. Colgate goes on to win, 56-14.

Offensive Player of the Week:  Kenneth Perez - Drake - 350 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns, 5 receptions, 102 receiving yards, 1 touchdown.

Defensive Player of the Week:  Jason Cook - Chattanooga - 10 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 TFL

Week 6 Game of the Week:

Columbia vs Fordham

Non-conference play is over, and alas, we have arrived at the conference schedule. For the IVY, this is where the real season begins. The reigning conference champions, Columbia, is looking to renew their title. After going undefeated last season, they certainly have an argument. However, dkreutner has absolutely owned Doublesteal. In their 15 meetings, DK has won 12 times. Frank Martinez leads an exciting Rams offense that will be looking to extend DK's dominance, and hopefully, put Fordham in a position to run the IVY tables. However, Columbia has one of the most well-rounded defenses in the country and they will provide an incredible test.

Prediction: Columbia 21 Fordham 17
