I wonder who is behind the conspiracy that's made basketball so popular in the rest of the world since the late 80s, early 90s.  Because, you know, a country's sporting interests don't change without a devious plot.
Basketball was played and the kids saw it being played and had heros based on the sports.

Lets go ask 100 kids playing basketball in Europe who their favorite player is. Bet they will all have some.

Lets ask 100 kids playing soccer in America who their favortie soccer player is. Would they all even have one?

Why are kids playing a game with little fan support and no heros to emulate?

A) There are plenty of kids playing plenty of sports in this country that don't get on TV or have widespread fan support.  For the most part, kids play sports because *shock* they enjoy them.

B) I'm quite certain you're confused about how much youth soccer players know in terms of favorite soccer players.

Here's the thing:

swamp doesn't like soccer

swamp doesn't like liberals

Therefore, he equates them. There's really nothing more to it than that.

And again, while soccer was clearly already active and growing by then, we did host the World Cup in 1994, and it was (and still is, dispite the fact that it expanded from 24 to 32 teams thus adding games) the most attended ever.  The 1996 Olympics and 1999 Women's World Cup also did wonders for exposure on the women's side.

What are these sports, besides soccer, that is popular with kids but has no commercial market?

Do the schools in your area only have football, baseball, and basketball?  And no women's sports at all?

Lacrosse and field hockey immediately come to mind.  Rugby even has a little bit of traction in some areas, though for older kids.

This notion that the only reason kids play sports is because they see them on TV and have heroes to emulate is just stupid.  How/why did kids wind up playing sports before TV, or before there was big money involved?  Exposure absolutely helps, as evidenced by the way things REALLY took off in the mid-90s on the heels of the World Cup.  But kids play sports because they enjoy them, because their friends play, etc.

I could detonate a Hydrogen bomb where I am standing on july 4th and I dont think I will kill anyone playing Lacrosse.

Baseball, Football, Basketball and soccer.

Maybe a very small hydrogen bomb...big enough to kill only you.

Otherwise, just given your proximity to Canada, I doubt it.

Lacrosse is still a niche sport most places but is growing like gangbusters, especially in the northeast.

I'm sure in 15-20 years you'll have it as part of a liberal conspiracy too.

The bottom line is that while the sports you mentioned are obviously the most popular participation sports in this country, there are collectively millions who play other sports that don't get anywhere near the exposure of baseball, football, and basketball.

There's not much fetish porn on basic cable. It must be a liberal conspiracy.

I support this and am willing to accept the collateral damage. A small price to pay to for freedomz.

I think you find more of it than you think.

Granted it is all PPV, but it is available to people with a basic cable hookup.

Porn is weird in a way.

Most Americans when asked take an attitude that they dont care about it, but also support its ban.

The people who actively campaign against it are from the radical left and he extreme right.
