So you think that we can maintain freedom with a good thought?

MILITARY = FREEDOM

why give them money and equipment they don't want? I thought the deficit was the greatest evil in the world?

A new Secretary of Defense would have to analyze the needs of the military and see what needs to be fixed.

Nothing is carved in stone.

I would assume we all want a strong defense and "Provide for the Common Defesne" is a big one.

what about Eisenhower's warning against the military-industrial complex? Is he a Euro-Socialist too?

He didnt say shut it down, just be aware of it.

We are in a very odd time in history. We have multiple nations that could suddenly challenge us militarly (China, Russia...etc) while we are in a guerilla war with global terrorism.

We need to be able to handle both threats.

I assume you agree that if we cannot defend ourselves everything else becomes less relevant.

And The military isnt really on the table. Obama has not even suggested cutting it  except as part of an automatic trigger.

<<And The military isnt really on the table. Obama has not even suggested cutting it  except as part of an automatic trigger...

This was not Obama's idea....this was the product of the bi-partisan committee...that included Paul Ryan. Both parties own this and it should not even be part of the debate. Resolve the budget issues or swallow the poison pill that they gave themselves. Shame on both parties...

<<He didnt say shut it down, just be aware of it.>> (The military-industrial complex)

Listen to or read his speech Swamp....it is far more than "be aware of it."  It is a warning...and sadly, one that has gone unheeded. Just look at the GOP trying to force the army to accept more Abrams A-1 tanks, than the army wants. Why in the world would we waste money on hardware that the professionals say that they don't want?

Re: huge armies...tell me again why they are needed? Is China going to invade the US? Russia? Why doesn't Sweden or Norway or Lichtenstein have huge armies? They all have higher per capita GDP than the US. Qatar? Kuwait, UAE?  same deal. If you want to have the largest military fine. But does it need to be bigger than everyone else combined? That is pretty paranoid thinking. Especially with nukes in your back pocket. And if it is not paranoia, than perhaps a reevaluation of foreign policy is in order to see why you need to fear everyone else.

And because "they hate our freedom" is not an acceptable answer.
