I'm right brained. And old like you. My name is even Tom.

But your writing style annoys me.

It seems you've mistaken me for a statnerd.   If so, you are, as I said, mistaken.   My formula is simple but accurate.   It is virtually impossible to "improve" RF defense beyond "average".  Not so for LF.    Beyond that, the below rec range/glove guys don't hurt nearly as much as in RF.

Nonetheless, it's a simgame.   I felt I discovered something that might help a few people.  You choose not to buy into it.   That's OK too.   If everyone does it, it becomes less useful.

Thanks for the compliment,  tecwrg.  (In the event it is a compliment.)  Unfortunately it has caused the peasants and townspeople to take up their pitchforks,  light their torches and march on Fool's Castle.  They think it's Arlen William's Castle.  Don't know how much longer I can hold out.......  They're battering down the gates......  The portcullis is breeched.......  Mother of Mercy!  Is this the end of Ol Tom?  .........

If we are lucky, it is.

Finished up the season in Boston Tea Party.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Frank Howell got just under half the innings in RF.   Did pretty well, IMO.

Has anyone seen a degradation in offensive stats when they moved the C to RF?
I'm at a loss with this guy  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Bengie Chantres.
He's about 60 points under his normal average and only has 2 HR on the season after posting 39 or more the last 3 seasons in a row.
I know it's only 27 games into the season but that seems like a pretty horrendous start when looking at his past stats.
10/1/2012 4:21 PM
Did you ever updated how RF fits into this?  On the first page of this thread you used RF to estimate a C in right field gets to one less hit every 5 games. Using F.Howell's RF and comparing it to AVE right fielder RF in one of my worlds, it looks like he's getting to one less hit every 3 games.

To get that back on offense, you'd need to upgrade from a .250 hitter to a .333 hitter.  (6 games = 24 AB.  6 hits =.250 AVE, 8 hits = .333 AVE.)

10/2/2012 2:25 AM
That's the final number on the chart(PPPS=positive plays per season).    It's a very simple equation.   Putouts+assists+positive plays-errors-negative plays.   Over a full 162 game season(1458 innings), Howell would have produced 153.3 PPPS while my other RF options would have produced 163 PPPS.

So, yes, Range Factor is accounted for.

BTW, you can't compare Howell to your RF.  Different league, pitchers, parks.   He can only be compared to my RF in that specific world.
10/2/2012 8:44 AM
Here's my RF experiment results.

ClaytonRollins started 80 games, playing 635 innings in RF.  He had 2 errors, 5 minus plays, a .979 Fld% and a 1.35 Range.  I'll take that, considering he hit .302/.380/.488 AND he allowed me to get JoeSchneider 99 starts at catcher.

I started the season Starting Rollins at Catcher vs RHP, then moving him to RF and catching Schneider vs. lefties.  But the last 60 games or so, I just started Schneider at catcher vs everybody and kept Rollins in RF, for the most part.

Schneider OPS'd .929 vs. lefties, but held his own vs. righties (.756) well enough for me to keep him in the game and maximize his PC and arm.

On the PC/CERA front, interestingly Rollins, with a PC of 51 had a CERA of 3.21 and Schneider had a 3.36 with his 83 PC.  But Schneider threw out 32% of potential base stealers, with a guy gong every 15 innings or so.  Rollins nailed 25% of the guys, with one guy going every nine innings or so.

I'll take the experimental results and run.

The experiment started because I knew I'd need to find a spot for Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Kevin Ryu.

He actually outperformed, IMO, my other RF in limited duty this year.

That said, he kicked back to back balls in a playoff game and certainly hasn't been as effective overall:

I've been doing something similar, but instead of playing rocks at RF, I've been using extra 2B/CF types that I happen to have on the roster. They've held their own at RF.
10/22/2012 9:20 AM
They'd be better in LF.   Lots of + plays.  They won't get them in RF.
10/22/2012 9:27 AM
In OCD this season, I split time between

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3241060#, a traditional RF and

http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3288545#, a catcher who can't catch.

Here's their fielding stats (hopefully it's readable)

Player Pos GP GS Inn PO A E DP + - Fld% RF
Michael Chang RF 63 63 569.2 93 4 8 0 0 3 0.924 1.53
Tom Drese RF 95 95 844.1 87 3 4 0 1 17 0.957 0.96

Compared to some guys above with similar fielding ratings, it seems like Drese really killed me in the field.

Is he a better enough hitter than Chang to justify the defensive miscues? Chang is up for arb and I'm not sure if I should go with Drese full time out there.

What do you guys think?
10/22/2012 5:44 PM
Drese was crazy bad out there.   That's a bit odd.
