Here's mine:

Don't forget to factor in the quantum differential for the P1-P5 pitches.

I'm not just going to give my formula away, but I will say that vR is the most important rating, followed by control and vL.

lc has it fairly correct, except for this,  a terrific control (90+) and a terrific #1 Pitch (90+) can overcome splits in the mid-60's.

So, vR, Control, vL and PItch #1, in that order.  Unless a guy has a huge #1...then it if more valuable than vL.

Add up vR, Control and the best of the other two.  240 is good, 250 if quite good, 260 is terrific, 270 is Greg Maddux.

I don't really think there's a "most important rating" as much as you can't have a pitcher killer rating.    I've had success with control in the 40s when other ratings were good.  I've had little success with splits in the 40s when other ratings are good.  I don't care what the other ratings are if control or splits are in the 20s.   Pitchers with splits in the 80s can get by with pitches in the 60s and vice versa.

But, FWIW, there does seem to be something "magical" about a 90+ rating.   It covers a lot of warts.

All kidding about knuckleballers aside, do the pitch types on the player card have any game effect at all?  4-seam fastball, Cut FB, Curve, that kind of thing?  Or are they just cosmetic?

Cosmetic.

I'd have to second mikes comment on pitch quality vs. splits.  Last season my Jacksonville team made the WS, (we lost) but we consistantly got beat down by pitchers with splits in the mid to high 50's and low 60's but they had high controll and very strong individual pitch ratings.  And guys with great splits 70's plus on both sides we got the best of if the pitch ratings were average to below average.  I came to the conclusion that I had evaluated pitchers entirely the wrong way for a few seasons.  It stinks when you think your light bulb went on, and find it was only a candle.

What if the second or third pitch is better than the first pitch? Will the pitcher throw his third pitch for instance more than his first pitch if it has a higher ranking?

Individual pitches are not thrown.

The general understanding is that the P1-P5 pitches are weighted such that P1 > P2 > P3 > P4 > P5.  The weighted effect of the pitches is factored into a larger formula that includes splits, control, etc. to determine the outcome of a plate appearance.

It has been said by sitestaff somewhere that the weighting is by quality, not by number-- so if P3 is better than P2, P3 will have more weight.

I believe they've said just the opposite.

That a P1-P3 of (80,70,60) is not the same as (70,80,60).

I believe Tec is right.
