The ridiculousness continues! Topic

The problem you have, arfy, is that you're playing other top teams in a short series.  As I just said, if your ace gets smoked, you're down 1-0 in a 5 game series.   That tough because he might not even see the mound again and you were counting on two wins from him.

Similiar to bripat, depth wins games in the regular season.  Superstuds win in the playoffs.  Top flight hitters are they only people who can hit top flight pitching consistantly.  That 70 56 60 60 guy that can do some damage against 73 overall starters never sees those starters in the playoffs.  They put together decent regualar season number since they really aren't that much less effective against second tier pitching than the superstuds nut then hit .156 in the playoffs.  To hit the top tier pitching you need some guy's with some 90's.
Yeah, this is kind of bullshit.

The difference is the pitching and luck.   I carry 7-8 pitchers in the playoffs because that's all I need.   But, if one of my top guys gets blown up, I'm already behind the 8 ball.   Claiming the only way to win in the playoffs is with superstuds is why people win 49 games 5 seasons in a row.   So they can acquire those superstuds.   And they're still not guaranteed a WS title.
I think you're both a little right, and both a little wrong.

I don't think you need a lineup of stud hitters in order to win in the post season.  A balanced lineup can win.  Especially with a solid defense behind it.

But, just like in MLB, the teams that can have a top-3 heavy pitching rotation is going to have an advantage over a team with a more balanced distribution of talent across their 4 or 5 SP's.

Because most teams will go with a 3 man rotation in the post-season, if your rotation is built with a 1A-1B-2-4-5 (or better) rather than a "standard" 1-2-3-4-5, your top 3 are going to shut down the opposition and should carry you deep.

And then, there's always that pesky "luck" thing, as Mike points out.

17% doesn't say luck to me.     I think my top 3 rotations have been pretty solid.  Enough to win a World Series?  Well I obviously don't even care about that, as right now I just want to be able to make it out of the first round.

I didn't say it because I thought it added length, but not power to my point, but you cannot count on winning WS's season after season with a team built on elite P'ing and only so-so hitting.  You are much better off the other way around.  The game-to-game variance is just too wide for pitchers.  As you state, your ace gives up 5 runs in 6 innings and you are pretty much shot.  Doesn't matter how good he is, they are all capable of it.  Your stud bat goes 0-4 and hopefully you have two or three more stud bats to make up for it.  Have elite pitching is awesome when your sample size is 162 and dangerous when it is 5 or 7.  I have never won a WS with less than 3 elite bats.  I've won a few without having a pitcher in the Cy Young race or Fireman of the Year race.

3 super hitters is enough.  1 does not need 9.  Personally my favorite strategy is to get them at 31/32ish.  They're value to others has declined by half some times and they still got 2-3 years of mashing left.  Most undervalued player in the game.

Yes thank you for pointing out tanking works.  We all aware.

Honestly, don't bother.   You won't find one and then I'll post my other WS winners and you'll find a lack of your "superstuds" on all but one.

As they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

IMO, the most "consistent" aspect of this game is defense.   It works the same in the playoffs as it does in the regular season.    It doesn't face stud pitchers or hitters, it simply faces the result of an AB.   That's the common trait you'll find with all my teams.     And that's what I build around.   It used to be cheap and easy to get but others have figured out the same thing, I suppose.

Yes, thank you for making my point for me.  You got lucky and won out of the #3 seed and didn't even come close to repeating.  My point was, and continues to be, that you cannot count on CONTINUED playoff success without a couple of superstar hitters.  My season 16 WS in Long Haul was mostly good fortune too, but I wouldn't use it as an example of how someone else could have playoff success.
9/10/2013 1:45 PM
Didn't come close?  Looks like I've lost in the LCS, to teams with heavy PITCHING, in the last two seasons.    I don't know anything about Long Haul but that appears to be the ONLY world you've had any measurable success.   I've won WS in 4 different worlds following the same basic formula of defense first.    Are you sure I'm proving your point?
9/10/2013 1:52 PM
Anyway, I stand by my "This is the only way to win" point by you is bullshit.    There are a lot of ways to build winning teams.   You choose the "I NEED A BUNCH OF SUPER PLAYERS!!!" strategy.    It's been successful in ONE world.   Congrats.

I'm pretty sure I am going into the season as the defending champ in Cobbfather.  I'm also pretty sure that I have not had any "measurable" success in HR because I put my team together the wrong way (a team full of good players, no great one's).  I don't define success as 6 DC's in a row.  Finally, I want summary judgement on your title defense.  I'm not arguing the facts, I just think a 3rd place finish and no return trups to the WS is success.

Anyway, you stand by your way of winning, I stand by mine.  Its an Idaho on Idaho fight for what its worth.

I didn't choose that strategy.  I took over a team that already had Bale and Perez and just helped it along.  You give me too much credit.
