Saving an arb year: Different Question Topic

HarryDiaz played in two MLB games for me at the end of last season.  He was probably up for 4 or 5 games.  But let's assume he was up for 10.  How many games do I have to keep him in AAA this year to save the arb year?

If you scroll over his MLB years it will say 0.002, once a player reaches 0.172 he has earned a 1.0 or in other words a full years service...So technically he has to stay down for 22 days next season, of course I would keep him til about 25 or so just to be safe.

Incorrect.  He only has to stay down for 20 minor league days.
  • a full HBD season is around 175 or 176 days
  • a year of ML service is 172 days
  • a minor league assignment of less than 20 days counts as major league service time
If his guy stays down for the first 20 days and is then called up on day 21, then he will only accrue 154/155 service days.  Add the 2 days of servivce he already has, and he's only at 156/157.  Which is less than 172.

My rule of thumb: if your minor league season starts with the AM game on a Friday, do your call-ups the following Friday after the AM game.  Takes all the day counting out of play.

My rule of thumb.   You control a player for 10 seasons at a minimum.    Diaz is under your control until he's 32.  Or, when he's likely to start his decline.   Quit putzing around with the 20 game nonsense with position players.

Actually, I would say Diaz is the exact type of where it makes sense to leave him down. His Durability is 65; he can't play a full 162, anyway.  Leave him down 20 games on Inactive, then call him up and have the extra year of a cheaper player (and the extra year on the back end, if you actually want him).

Sound strategy except half of the first 20 are against divisionmates.   If he can help you win those games, you won't be as ****** at yourself when you fall a game or two short of the playoffs.    Rest him against the chumps in your world.   And there will be chumps.

You play in the NL, Harry is a DH.  He may help you knock off your division opponents playing catcher, or he may allow a passed ball or 3 during those early series that cost you a game or two.  His bat will make up for his crappy defense over the course of a season, but his defense is going to cost you in a couple of spots.  I think you could go either way.

In the long run, his makeup is low, and due to his defense and stamina, his overall is low.  He'll be in your team's uniform as long as you want him to be in your team's uniform and are willing to pay his initial demands.  I'm generally an advocate for keeping guys back that 20-25 games to preserve the 1 extra season, but in this case, his overall demands are going to be lower than his batting production due to his lower overall rating.  He'll never be an 'expensive" player, when he hits 32, heck maybe a season or two before then he's going to start the slide.  Once his power goes, he losses most of his value as there is nothing outstanding about him otherwise.  I'd leave him up now and use him as you see fit.

Actually, if we had bothered to look at his card, he's already played 16 minor leagues games.    So there's two things I have issue with now.

1.  Holding him back 20 games.
2.  Playing that low DUR guy while waiting to call him up after 20 games.

Poor game play all around.

Plus mo is 15-7 while 2nd place is 9-13.    Nothing lost here.   Hell, hold him back til roster expansion.

And pull him the **** out of your minor league lineup... unless he is just going to be a bat off the bench at ML...
