And I get the "past records" thing.    I don't know if it's exactly like that for me but, when I draft/sign a guy, I like to follow his career.   There's something kinda cool, in a nerdy way, of drafting/signing an 18 y/o and having him develop/play like you envisioned.   My two favorite players right now:

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Kevin Ryu  2nd highest IFA bonus I've given out( Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Carlos Moya now holds that title but he's only in his 2nd season).    Had to find a place to play him and "invented" the C in RF to get his bat in my line-up.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jimmy Powell  #3 pick and the best player I've ever had.

It would suck to lose their history.

I don't think there really is any easy solution for HBD. But what is tried and true to what does work is polling owners well before the season ends on who will return or not and getting a classified ad up and running by the end of the regular season. Far too many worlds roll over and a week later they are just getting an ad up. I have also read many a coaches chat where almost a week after rollover has occured that the commish will state something like, " I want to give the old owners another 2 or 3 days to reup before I get an ad up". Guess what dude? I and 25 others want to get playing again and you have yet to post a classified.

Also having a firm MWR is a good thing to abide by. For those owners that don't want one they have public worlds that they can play in.

But interest in HBD is waning. It is for me as well. I will be running 2 or 3 teams in the coming year as opposed to the 5 I ran this past year.
This?

I won't blame commishes for failure but there are few easy steps to follow(and they're not time consuming):

1. treat everyone fairly
2. put the best interests of the world first
3. find out who's staying/leaving sooner rather than later
4. start recruiting early even if you don't know if you have openings
5. remove absentee owners promptly
6. enforce rules evenly(or create rules that the world wants)
7. vet new owners.  Check their record, ask someone you recognize about them in a world they're in, etc, etc

None of this takes a great deal of time.   And you'll find that the commishes of the "good" worlds do every one of these.  And, if you don't have that sort of time, pass it on to someone who does.

1. treat everyone fairly

That is excellent and essential. I was in a world where I missed the MWR by 1 or 2 wins. The commish and some other owners wanted me to leave so that they could uphold the integrity of their world. Mean while a original owner in that world had clearly tanked. He missed the MWR by something like 10 wins. He played the season with 20 players and out of position players. He however was allowed to stay. I did not put up a fuss about being booted out. I missed the MWR and a rule is a rule. It did however leave a bad taste in my mouth and I will never set foot in that world again. Both me and the other guy should have been shown the door, not just me.

Yep, I'm not a fan of "review by committee".

I have this guy to watch in moonlight Graham:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Tomas Prado

He recently picked up hit #3,000. The record in that world 3,269. I think he has a decent shot at it.

My team really sucks but this makes playing very interesting for me.

Getting a little off-topic but these boards are largely dead..........so you weren't around for my calls for HOF votes for Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jamey Cambridge.    I brought him back as a late season call-up so he'd have a chance at 400 homers.     400 homers, .300 avg and .900 OPS as something other than LF/1B I thought would lock him down for HOF.   Not so much.    But it was fun for me to give him a shot at it while using him to rest some other guys.

I find that classified ads on the forums are, generally, a waste of time.
12/19/2014 2:15 PM
How so?
12/19/2014 2:23 PM
It's like a backpage section for escorts; everyone wants to use fancy language and cute fonts to attract attention but when you get to the basics, every listing is for (more often than not) the same thing.

Every world I've seen a posting for in classifieds has a MWR, anti-tanking measures, great core group of loyal owners, fun atmosphere, competitive but good-natured world chat, etc. etc.

I think it ends up being luck, if somebody sees your ad first and is looking for a team, they may poke around at a couple others but if nothing seems wrong with your league then it's going to be the chosen one.

And yes I have posted a classified, albeit only once (not counting when looking for replacement owners), but I check it periodically and see the same threads just being bumped on a daily basis. My world had 3 openings at rollover; I sitemailed a guy who had owned a previous team in the league for like 20 seasons but left a couple seasons ago and asked if he had any interest in coming back to his team, got no response. Put up a classified ad, I believed we bumped it a total of 3 times in one week, and included franchise links in the post (one of which has the 1st overall pick and another with 4th overall, both attractive options to any newcomer) and then the private world restriction ran out and I decided not to keep it private. Once we showed up on the public world list, it took two days to fill, including two owners who have never played (or are using an alias.)

If they are new owners and we can help them with our knowledge and create a fun atmosphere for them, then I'd feel much more proud than I would have if the openings went to someone who already has 6 teams and can't have the time to be as dedicated as owners with less teams. To further go with my point, I definitely think any true new owner will not check "Forums" nor go to "Classifieds" before joining a public world if they are presented with that option.

Fair enough.  Mine are the same every season.   I just copy/paste.   It's the only form of recruiting I do.    I don't advertise a great group of core owners(you might consider them to be dicks and, if you wanted, you can check to see how long they've been around).  I don't advertise fun because it's different for everyone.   Your fun might be suckass boredom to me.   And vice versa.    I'm also unsure if the back and forth in our chats are good-natured or not.   But people stay anyway.

At the end of the day, I don't think the classifieds bring owners in.   I just use it to let them know we might have a spot open.    And that's what I need from the classifieds.
12/19/2014 3:25 PM
Hey, if it works for you that's awesome and means the intended purpose is being fulfilled. Maybe it's just a bit of jealousy on my end that my world didn't have success in recruiting via that method.
12/19/2014 3:32 PM
I like to put a fair amount of detail in my Classified ad for the world I commish, and tweak it every season as details change.  I think it's important to advertise the world rules, and to put something in there about longevity of the owners and stability of the world.  But your point is well-taken.  A lot of stuff in most classified ads (mine included) is little more than "fluff", and probably doesn't carry a lot of weight or relevance.

One warning that I will say that the prospective "world shoppers" should beware of: if you see a world that is offering a gimmick, such as a GC or some other financial incentive to join . . . that should be a big red flag.  In my opinion, gimmicks are just band-aids to try to get a world up and running this season.  I don't think they lend themselves to being sustainable in the long run.  The other gimmick that you often see or hear about is the "owner swap" (you take an open team in my world, and I'll take an open team in yours).  Again, not really a sustainable method to keep a world up and running, as the "extra" team you're taking on is going to be like the red-headed stepchild among all your teams . . . you're taking on a team as an obligation, not because you really want to be there.  Those are the teams that will be the first to be dropped when the owner decides he wants or needs to cut back a team or two due to financial or time constraints.
12/19/2014 3:56 PM
I try and offer my services as a replacement owner every time I see a thread calling for one, but lay out upfront that I probably don't fit their needs, in that I'd be signing on as just that, a replacement owner. I do not make guarantees about staying past the rest of the season.

With that being said, I've yet to actually take over a team as a replacement because the commishes are looking for the long-term guy and are apparently finding them.
12/19/2014 4:15 PM
Or simply finding owners who aren't quite so upfront as you are.

Many guys SAY they will stick around past the replacement season, but many are full of it.
12/19/2014 4:26 PM
And I see no point in lying about it. If something came up and you truly changed your mind, sure. But I'm not here to BS with anyone; it's fun to play and would be cool to get a quarter-, half-, whatever- season for free and bid the franchise adieu.

I've not been thru one.   What made it a bad experience?
What made it a bad experience is that his team won 100+ 5 seasons in a row pre merger, and now they are barely a .500 club.
They are old and salary is high, but it's the merger. THAT's what caused it.

Interestingly the team with the best record in that world is in his division and just finished up a rebuild. That same team finished 4th in the division last season.

Sure there's no correlation there either and it is strictly a case of "mergers suck".
So you can speak for me? STFU

To answer mike first of all due to the merger I wasn't able to set my budgets according to what it was the last season in Banks.

I am also one who enjoys the history of my teams. The player stats are gone and ratings. All history that is tied up with the players is gone. With the teams as well. There is also no HOF and there won't be for many seasons to come. This is a huge part of my enjoyment of the game. The players that I had from pre merger honestly do not even feel like my own.

So hence I rarely check on this team anymore and am making zero effort in day to day of the team.

But really the reason is that my team is old.....

I just saw that you said kind of the same thing in WC of your newly merged world, (merging sucks, this will be my first and last season here) and when owners asked why, you didn't bother to elaborate.

I figured if you wouldn't bother answering the owners in your own world you probably wouldn't here either. I see I was wrong on that.

Budgets were explained to every owner pre-merger. They stay the same as they were pre merger, but if you try to adjust them they revert to 10 (+/-4). I try to make sure everyone is aware of this, but still each merger there are owners who forget or didn't read my sitemail or whatever the reason, mess up their budgeting. that can be frustrating  and I can certainly understand that.

As far as history goes, I am confused as to why this is an issue. I mean I get that many of us enjoy that aspect of the game, but again this was something that was explained to everyone pre merger. It shouldn't have come as a shock. Bottom line to me is that while history is nice it grows old when there is no future. If your world has sat for 4 months how many times can you look at all the historical data? Nobody WANTS to merge, but it beats sitting idle for months on end, and that's the decision many owners are faced with.

I have a follow up question for jibe. Since you said you'd never merge again what would be your stance exactly?

Would you be the guy who says I hate the idea of merging but if the rest of you want to merge I'll just pull my team out, or would you be the guy who loves the history of the world so much you will try to block the rest from merging?
