Forum Folks:

I recently allowed a Type A 3B to walk in free agency.  He was just too expensive for me to afford during a rebuild, and I figured I would likely land a pretty high draft pick.  But I didn't.  He signed with another team for 12 mil a year, and I got jack squat in return.  Anyone know why?

None of these guys got 12m a year.

What player are you taking about?

I think he's talking about Roosevelt Hubbard, who was arb2 eligible, thus no draft pick

Hard lesson learned.

In order to be eligible for FA compensation, a player needs to either play out his contract, or opt out of a mutual or player option.  And then be classified as Type A or B.

If you release an arb-eligible guy (which youngruff did here), or decline a team or mutual option, you won't get compensation.

That is insane that you let this guy (Hubbell) go even for a TYPE A pick you're making a huge mistake.. I bet he was only asking for $8-10M..

LOL.  He's in AAA.

Some sort of comedy of errors here?

I saw that.  5 years, $80m contract, and he's assigned to AAA.

gigadig gave him over 100 AB to prove he deserved that deal.   Firm but fair.

youngruff was wise. Hubbell's from Lawrence, ma. only hoodlums live there. he got rid of a lockerroom cancer

Only makes 12 mill? Pft. Pesants don't belong in the bigs.

Whoa - put myself of trial a little bit with this one!  I don't know, 12-13 mil a year, had another 3B waiting in the wings, that's more money to spend on internationals... yeah, probably a mistake but - eh - I'll deal with it.

Didn't know about that arb2 thing, thanks!  Won't make that mistake again.

He wouldn't have cost you 12-13M. You could have signed him to a one year deal in arbitration for ~$8M.

Not sure what he would have cost to lock up long term in the pre-FA negotiation period, but probably also less than $12M.

Also, that guy was a former #1 overall pick, is already a stud, and is 25. I doubt you find an IFA who projects to be as good as he is already.

Not to mention you are playing .450 ball through 50 games with a $28M payroll.

I don't know why you went immediately to "rebuild" mode, but that mentality has been a topic on the forums for years

Youngruff, how much did he want for a long term deal?
